Helping a fellow Pontiac owner 74 GTO

I have a buddy Don down in Surrey who has a 4 gear 74 GTO and when he tries to shut her off it won't shut off????  He has to brake and drop the clutch to get her to shut off. Anyone have any ideas on how we can find the problem..

I would start at the ignition switch. Check voltage after your shut off method. Check voltage with key off. The switch may be hot enough to burn you, so be careful.

Pete, when you check out the ign. switch, also check the plastic plug connector on back of switch, if it got hot, may have melted it inside & hot wire & ign. side may be touching. Just a thought, Halfbreed"s on the right track, unless you have a burn't wire harness the switch is where to start!!!   Pete

has he done any alternator work lately?? wires mixed up and is backfeeding a constant 12 volts into the system? not through the key switch? melted wires will do the same thing. A quick check would be to disconnect the alt. tape up the wires and see if it shuts off with the key.

I've had melted wires cause this problem as well.

later...rog

Here's a pic of another 1974 GTO I took at the Portage LaPrairie MB carshow last summer, Pontiac 455 4 speed in that one, the 350 was stored away.

Thanks guys.. You are down the right track. I will pass the info onto him and he can check it out.. I think I asked him if he was or did any alternator work and he said no and it just happened one day when driving..

I'm in a woe here with my 70 Judge now as I just murdered my 3.55 Ring and Pinion and Im having a hell of a time finding BOP parts for her..  Its a 8.2 10 bolt. and for some reason or another the guts are different then Chevy.. go figure...  Having a Canadian Pontiac has many different avenues for sure..
