Maybe you had a mouse get into the exaust pipe and fill it full of grain or something else that has it plugged solid.

Well I disconnected the exhaust and it didn't make a difference Any thoughts on what I might try next?

Have you checked if the timing chain jumped? I googled the 239 and it suppositly has a chain , not gears. If your engine is new disregard this. But a loose chain usually jumps when the engine is shut down so it would have run fine just before.

bob if you got lots of spark take the plugs out and throw them in the oven at 400 for 25 min.crank the engine over with no plugs at this time and clear the holes when the timer goes off on the stove put the plugs in as fast as you can then try to start with fresh gas,maybe in a can hooked to yer pump.If that dont work and its a standard try a pull start ie turn on key and throw in gear.These tricks work for me when stuff sits and wont start,and yes no im not crazy

Pull the # 1 plug and rotate engine,see if the dist. is pointing in the right direction when the #1 cyl is up top.Backfiring,or puckin out the carb at all?Not a mech.,but this is always a good starting point if you havent done it yet.my 02cents.may give you an indication re timing chain as well.

Still working on it jc, I've got Andre (Fitz) helping me with the problem. The timing chain seems to be fine, looking at a possible valve issue. I have some tests to run before pulling the head but no time till the weekend. Work before play, lol

Bob When you put the starting fluid in the carb did it fire? If it did not it is a spark or compression issue.
Did you run a compression test? What was the results?
One of the biggest problems I have with old equipment is the carb float sticking open and flooding the engine but that is obvious with wet plugs.
Is it still 6 volt? If it has been changed to 12 volt and a ballast resistor installed on the coil , you need a bypass for starting when it is cold.

Well it seems like my trouble started back when I originally flooded the engine. The cylinder walls were washed of oil resulting in low compression. After taking apart a bunch of stuff and testing and putting things back together, with the help of Andre (Fitz) the engine now runs. A huge thanks goes out to Andre and to everyone who helped.
