The Maritime radar picture looks a bit rough right now. How is it going there guys?
In Halifax, the wind has really picked up here in the past hour, I can hear it pretty well outside and I can see the trees moving quite a bit, though it's dark out. Halifax airport was showing gusts to 64 km/h at 7pm, but has probably picked up a bit since then. Sounds like 70 - 80 here, from past experience.
Raining like heck at the moment. Temp has dropped from +5 earlier to approx +1 now, so I imagine the transition to freezing precipitation isn't too far off now. Parts of the valley and northerly areas are now down to 0, and I see Amherst is at -3C at the moment.
From the highway cams, it looks like it is already snowing in the valley and northern areas, and Mount Uniacke, which is only about 10 - 15 minutes north of the city has already started snowing. With these winds it will surely be white-out conditions on the highways now. Highway cams: https://novascotia.ca/tran/cameras/
Hit the 'play' icon on the satellite animation, and you can see a distinct swirling pattern, not unlike a hurricane. Looks like we're in for an interesting night.
It's -1 at my place right now. Snowing pretty good. Heavy winds. Lights flickering. The usual.

The wind has been hitting pretty hard all night. You can see the trees bending over - haven't noticed any down yet - and the wind is roaring all around. House is creaking more than I've heard it in a long time.
The rain turned to freezing rain and a snow mix earlier, and it sounds like ice pellets hitting the house now. Also heard some thunder earlier on. There doesn't seem to be much accumulation, but it's hard to tell as the snow is blowing by the windows horizontally.
Checked the NS Power outage map. Currently 250 active outages, affecting 52,562 customers. We still have power for now. Looks like Don's is out, though.
Gotta love winter - at least it's not boring, but this is really nothing out of the norm for this part of the world. The variety keeps it interesting.

Currently no power, temp -5, dropping to -11 this morning, -16 tonight, only got a few inches of snow, mostly came as rain. Gusts to 90, its a big storm, power could be off all over for a while if this wind and snow and ice took down a lot of trees, which it could have. I have a generator Ill have to dig out when daylight arrives.

Sorry to to hear about the loss of power.
Nothing to report here. Average winter storm. There might be 30 cm. on the ground by the day's end (Saturday). I shone my high lumen flashlight down our driveway. Supposed to slow down around noon today. Probably won't be doing snow removal until later on or tomorrow.

Just came in from plowing. It's supposed to snow and blow all day so I thought best to do a bit now before it's too deep to push. It was knee deep in spots in the driveway. There was a waist high drift at my back door. It's fairly heavy so that was a good workout to dig out. No signs of the road plows yet.

Made out alright here. The wind roared all night and most of the morning, making it difficult to sleep, but a quick survey revealed no downed trees around the house (or on the house, cars, etc...). It's hard to say how much snow we got as it drifted quite a bit. Rough guess about 15 cm. Underneath the snow there's a layer of ice that started out as a wet snow, freezing rain, ice pellet mix. The worst is the wind chill - currently it's -13C at the airport, but the wind chill is -26 due to the winds still gusting to 70 km/h. I don't have to go anywhere today, so I plan to wait or the winds to die down a little more before I hit the shovels/ice scrapers. It's not the temperature, but the wind takes your breath when shoveling. I'd prefer -30 with no wind and no humidity to this (FWIW, our relative humidity is currently 80%).
According to the power outage map, there are over 750 outages affecting over 35,000 customers. The lower customer number with the higher outage number compared to last night is indicative of more rural outages, and those will be the hardest ones to repair. Plus, they won't send a lineman up when the winds are above a certain threshold (not sure what that number is... maybe 70 or 80 km/h?).

Niagara region, through to Quebec could get 40 cm of snow in the next 24 hours.
That beautiful cold western air is pushing the storm East.
Us, in the far South-Western Ontario region, may only get 10 centimeters out of this.
Sorry Kevin

I fueled up the Kubota, hooked up the box scrapper yesterday. Today I took off the front tire, set up the new tire machine and put new tire on the rim.the original was cracked and losing air. Plugged in the block heater and I am ready to go

The power came on and went off a few times, back on now for about an hour. So -17 this morning, warming up, 20-30mm of rain tomorrow, wind warning gusts to 100kph; then -12 Tuesday night, above freezing again wed.
My nephew shovelled his back yard in Charlottetown today.
Hope your power stays on, Don. I noticed on the NS Power outages map this morning that they are down to near 5000 customers still without power, but the south shore, specifically the Mahone Bay/Lunenburg area seems to have the most outages remaining.
Gotta love the rollercoaster, eh? I was out shovelling last night when the wind chill was dipping into the negative twenties. it was chilling to say the least. Now a bunch of rain and more strong winds blowing in the opposite direction for tomorrow (in the direction that could blow trees down into my house, always a concern on my lot for a number of reasons). At least we haven't seen anything near the level of what BC has gone through (or the fires in the summer), so there's always someone worse off than ourselves, I suppose.

This was the front of my house on Saturday after two days of high single digit temps, heavy rain and very high winds: no snow to be seen anywhere.
Sucks when it goes off again- it did at 6pm, still off. NS Power must be having lots of fun with whatever is happening. The grid is kind of like a car that has no regular maintenance, no oil changes, no rustproofing, no filters, etc. It gets fixed when a tow truck needs to be called. Latest suggestion for back online is 11pm. Ive not had this on again off again power, this is strange. Usually a storm knocks it off, it gets fixed, power comes on and stay on. Weve had no weather issues since yesterday that would make the power get broken again.

I think what saved us is Maritime Electric was on our road cutting down the tops of trees that were near the wires a few weeks ago. I was really surprised we didn't lose power with this storm. It's usually a given.
