I have the 52 hard top, pics are in welcome aboard. We are going to start on the car this winter with a front clip from a fire bird, and I am not too familiar with the 305 c.i. engine. My goal with the car is to have a cruiser with modern front end and engine,but keep the rest of the car stock. PROS& CONS on the 305????? Thanks Tom

Thats a nice looking car you got there. If this was a pole I would vote for the 350. Cost about the same to rebuild both . But more power available with the 350.

Look for a wrecked iroc or ta and put a tuned port 350 in her! Just pull the computer and assorted harnesses, and bolt right in! Look pretty cool with a fuel injected mill! Reliable as heck too!

For making horsepower the 305 is a dud. However for a cruiser it is just absolutely peachy keen fine and dandy. You've got the complete 305 clip, don't buy anything more, go ahead and install it and cruise to your heart's content, eh?

I drove an 88 IROC 305 tuned port as a company car for the summer months in about 90. I thought it was a blast to drive. Granted, not killer horsepower but I was quite impressed as far as a 305 goes. These guys are too hard on the 305 unless you mean a 2 barrel version!

Like the article I posted above says, you can easily get 325 HP from a LG4 305. I am confused by all the other posters saying get this get that. Sometimes I don't think everybody reads these posts too well. You already have a 305 in the clip you are going to use and it can make 325 HP if you want so I just don't understand why you would go to added expense and time and trouble to find a larger engine that might get better results.
I don't know about everybody else but I drive my old car less than 1000 km per year, most of that is putting around to the odd cruise-in here and there. Even when I go on the highway I don't speed so reliability and proper power to weigh is what you need.
I have had many 350's and only one 305 but I can say 100% that the one L-69 305 I had covered all but the Vortec 350.

I had a 305 in my 78 Monza. Had a 4 speed and was a ok driver. My son built a 305 for a project and was disapointed in the performance. He was looking for horsepower but your just looking for a cruiser. If you already have one , it will serve that purpose no problem.

Ray, you gotta come out with me next summer & I'll show you how to put the miles on, I'm going to hit the 7000 mi mark this yr. As for the 305, I read those threads & yes you can get some AWSOME power out of one with the "right "parts, BUT I allways say CU.IN. makes HP so its sometimes easyer to "GO BIG or GO HOME!!!!! I agree if its a cruiser, the 305 is FINE What rear gear ratio will also come into this decision as well??????????????/

I've had a few 5 litre 305s, 2 bbl, 4 bbl & FI. Not one of them had any power. On the other hand, all of the 5 litre 307 2bbl Chevy engines had lots of power.

Ray I guess I do have more time, at least 4 cruise ins on week nights, 5 now the friday night one has started in Port Perry till end of the month & then 1 or 2 on the weekends Planing on going to Stouffville next weekend, they had at least 850 cars there last yr. St Jacobs in 2 weeks then Charlston West Virginia Oct. 5th to 12th for the DOO Wop show, already registered for that one!!! Good thing Janice is understanding that she married a "gear head"

Check your muscle car stats for the 60's and 70's. These times are on par with some famous cars, like the 64 tri power 4 speed GTO:

As in all these things it's a matter of personal preference. I looked at buying a new MC SS in 88 because I liked the styling. The 305 turned me off from the car. I never understood why GM didn't simply drop a 350 in the SS.

Internal politics I suspect. It was faster than the Camaro when the SS first came out in 84. Later Camaro got 350 to make sure.

You are proabably right about that. Didn't the Firebird GTA get the 350 around 90 or 91 as well?

Looks like the L69 was the 305 to have. The newer LB9 engine could be had with 215 HP. This engine would have been a lot more fun in my 78 Monza than what I had. And with a four speed, even more fun.

The L69 featured a compression ratio of 9.5:1, heads from the LU5 engine and the camshaft from the L83. Additionally the engine came equipped with a dual snorkel air cleaner assembly, aluminum intake manifold, aluminum flywheel and a knock sensor which allowed more aggressive spark timing. This engine produced 190 hp (142 kW) @ 4800 and 240 lb·ft (325 N·m) of torque @ 3200 rpm.
