Hi guy's and girls..........I had the 51 Silverstreak out for it's maiden run last week and it was a great treat. There was a couple of hang ups, one small and the other I'm concerned about. The first was a complete engine shut down but after a few checks for air, gas and spark it turned out to be the rotor which I replaced and was off again. The second deals with driving in a straight line. When I start off everything sounds like a 69 year old car should in first gear, shift to second brings a lot more pep, shift to 3rd and the wind is through my hair, great. After a few minuets there is a noise that appears to come from the front and not the rear of the car. Its not really a rattle or a clunk, it is constant and has a definite repetitious beat to it, it is not extremely loud but always lurking there. When I coast down a hill it disappears slightly but can be heard on acceleration. Some times when doing a strong left turn it will go away and on a right it seams a bit louder, push in the clutch and it diminishes. That is what puzzles me, Is it the clutch, throw bearing, front right wheel or what. Anyone had a similar issue? Anyone with a good guess? 1951 Silverstreak flat head 6 with a standard trans. thanks in advance, keep up the good work.........
i ad the same problem whit mine it was the oakie bushing and the u joint
in reverse gear you can feel a little shaking like someting getting stock somewhere.

Don't know if your car has front A-arm bushings like my 56, but check them (mine were worn out and the car had similar clunks).

Does the rattle vary with speed, or engine RPM? If it varies with engine RPM, look forward of trans. If it is strictly with speed, usually it's behind the tranny or front suspension.

thanks for the hint. The noise decreases when I let off on the gas but returns when I apply power to the car.

hey nice car.......my son has the same car in the same colour he's on here as "CAN'T AFFORD A TWO DOOR' we just dropped in a rebuilt 283, the original 283 shattered a
piston and we will be rebuilding it during the winter. no theres not a bottle in the door

hi......I finally think I found the problem. I was given a 3 speed transmission because I was getting ready for a last resort swap out when I found it had a real good tranny mount attached to it. I removed mine because it had looked tired and found that the plat part that actually mates tp the bottom of the tranny was shattered and not doing its job any more. I replaced the mount with the used one, crossed my fingers and took it for a test drive. What a surprise, the noise has gone down to just regular mechanical sounds and I am 99% vibration free. The tranny swap will still happen later because of the leaks it has but what a difference. Thanks again for all the ideas presented they helped to narrow down the issue.

Look for a bottle sealed by the door panel, inside the door cavity (old story: http://www.snopes.com/autos/grace/rattle.asp ).
