I'm looking for a cheap tach to use on my 496 engine build fire up. It will be mounted somewhere on the DIY test stand. I plan on pre running the motor for a bit before the install.
Anyone have a old cheap tach sitting around they could part with (or lend for that matter)? Brackets, mounting etc isn't important at all, just something that will work 12 volt V8. A spare tach is probably the one thing I don't have!
I could buy a new one...but why for this?
Thanks, Mark

Have an old 3" tach you can have(only goes to 8g) but shipping might be a bit much, yours if you can't find anything closer. Also would a timing light with tach or point/dwell meter with tack work?

Carl, I don't know if you already knew this but they actually were made by Ford, for their heavy trucks. They faced the opening toward the windshield, they let out heat. Pontiac picked them up for their SD's, gave them a GM part number so they were "legal+ GM parts.
Here's one (they came with either painted or chrome for the "grill". They are very cool.
No, I'm sorry, I thought you got me mixed up with my other brother (Darryl) in Florida.

Ford started their Super Duty line around 1957.
Pontiac started their Super Duty program around 1961 and bought Ford Super Duty scoops
I can see Pontiac using the scoop as it was readily available, but to also use the name??
Still seems odd.
Thanks
Randy

I read somewhere they used this scoop on the trucks from 59 to about the late 70's. The truck in the pic is about 20KM from my house, not sure what year it is. It said diesel on the hood.

Methinks the one Carl sent to Florida might be this one - he sent it to me absolutely free - I have not yet gotten up the courage to cut holes in my (recently restored, after this pic) hood, but here is a mock-up photo:

Here's another one, it's not for sale, may be restored some day.
