Well it's time to finish the assembly of L6 engine with all the peripherals for the run in. I have a few questions or concerns about air and oil filters.
Would any of you recommend reusing the original air filter and simply clean them as they were intended ? If so how do you get the air filter canister apart , twist it off ?
Then there is the oil filter, is there a dry cartridge filter that can be used as an alternative ?

I would convert the original air cleaner on the inside to use a paper element. Keep the original look of your engine's air cleaner but make it less messy with the paper element filter. As far as the oil filter, most of these older engines never had oil filters in the first place. That oil filter you have is an accessory by pass oil filter set up. This by pass system oil filter only filters tiny amounts of oil at a time, hence the by pass. I do not put much importance in them, a quality oil that is changed yearly is far more important. Another draw back is that these by pass oil filters on average rob 3-4 psi of your engine's oil pressure. I converted my 57 Pontiac's 261 air filter with a paper element and my oil filter is only on there for looks. Post some photo's of your engine and the two items you are concerned with. I have included mine on my 57 Pontiac. Good luck and cheers. George
Sorry about the pictures, they are the only ones that I have when the engine was completely assembled. I agree fully with regards to the paper cartridge for the intake filter, so you say just cut the internal right out?
So for the Oil filter, where would you install the plug on the intake side ? Thanks for your comments .
I did that with an oil-bath air cleaner, even though I didn't own a car to put it on (so I could say I did it).

Latest news, I have cleaned the internal sub-straight of the oil bath filter and measured for a new paper cartridge, which is now on Order. Secondly Long Stroke, you are 100 % correct I read in my 66 year old shop manual on page 6-25 in raised Blacken lettering that external oil filters or cleaners are not necessary or desirable on Pontiacs and no provisions has been made for their installation.
This means what I have on my original engine is an aftermarket install. Which in my opinion, for the amount of driving my wife will do with this car, the original design will be adequate.

Dale, you would have to plug both fittings on the oil galleries but i think you know that already. I would keep the oil filter canister there any way because they look neat. Your air filter unit is obviously very different than mine on my 57 261. Glad you worked that out and enjoy the results. Dale, have you considered a build thread on your car with all the work that is involved in photo form. Most of us love that sort of thing here on C.P., just looking at the two photos you posted has us excited already. Good luck and cheers. George

Again thanks for your input, with respect to the oil galleries , one is already blocked off by the engine builder, I kind of found this peculiar when I received the engine back. The one left is on the side of the engine block, one bolt. I guess the engine people put the fitting back where they found it? I am not sure why they would block one maybe because it was just a threaded plug? Not sure.
With respect to your suggestion about a project build thread, I already have one started, it can be found in Pre 1958 Pontiac General Discussion. I, plus those who commented, have already got two pages of comments and photos. I have more recent photos, just not ready to add an update to the thread. I am not a professional builder or mechanic, and I will and certainly do make mistakes, I can handle criticisms providing it comes from someone who has earned the right to comment.

was in a Nappa store a year or so ago and they had an oil filter with a spin on set up and it was the only thing listed for my 54. The only real difference between a 54 and 50 is the carb and aircleaner.
