Hello! I'm searching for a 261 straight 6 that was offered in late 50's/early 60's Pontiac cars. Wondering if someone has one laying around from an engine swap. Let me know what you have!
Thanks

I'm located in Saskatchewan! What condition are your 261's in?
this is sweet . can be hear running for 600 . isn't swift current out West?
Good find. Totally gave up looking on kijiji due to finding nothing for a solid 8 or 9 months.
Anyone have any experience with solid lifters vs hydraulic? Much more noise or maintenance with solid lifters?

They are both good cores for rebuild. The both of them turn over and had no water in the oil. I am sure you should be able to find a good one in Sask. The hydraulic lifter 261's came with a high lift camshaft in the Can Pontaics. The soild lifters were used in trucks. For performance the hydraulic lifter one is better. The soild for low end torque.

Russell, the 261 was offered from 1955 to 1962 in Canada. They have become very hard to find and American's are looking for them as well, usually for vintage hot rods or vintage custom lead sleds. I had an extra 1957 261 that i sold to an American from the Chicago area and it went into a 1952 Chev ragtop lead sled. He drove all the way from Chicago U.S.A. to Milton, Ontario just for my 261 motor, so that tells me they are rare and do have a following. In case you do not know the Canadian 261 (1955-1962) and the American 261 (1954-1962) have a number of differences, the main difference is the U.S. 261 was a Chevrolet truck only motor and they all had solid lifter camshafts. All the Canadian 261 motors had hydraulic cams for the Pontiac's. I put a solid lifter cam and lifters in my 57 Pontiac 261 and love it. Depending on your driving you may have to adjust your lifters every two or three years. I got my solid cam, lifters, push rods, cam sprocket and crank sprocket from PATRICK'S in Arizona, U.S.A. Nice to be different from the crowd, with an in liner motor and the movement is growing world wide. Welcome to C.P. and keep in mind that we are here to help. Cheers. George
