What ABC123 pictured is a caged nut. I don't know what you're looking for is called other than possibly a pressed in but. Something tells me I might have something in the garage, but it'd take quite a while to find.
Can a smart tool & die maker fabricate something?

looking closely at the nut I think you may be right.....this one seems held in by being pressed into the square hole.
.....and if they sell at $14.00 a pop, I'll have find one more reasonable priced,
or being a retired tool and die maker, I'll take your advice and make one myself.

I had a typo in my post which I now corrected. It read "Can a small tool & die maker....." which I've now corrected to read "Can a smart tool & die maker.....". Knowing you're a retired tool & die maker, I was being a bit cheeky.

I think these nuts are form of pierce nuts.
SQUARE PIERCE NUTS OFFER SIMPLIFIED ASSEMBLY BY PIERCING ITS OWN HOLE
WITH CLASS 10 STRENGTH FOR HIGH STRENGTH JOINT PERFORMANCE.
NUTS CAN BE INSTALLED IN-DIE, ELIMINATING SECONDARY ASSEMBLY COST.
I would have suggested a j-nut or u-nut initially, but thought you were aiming for a replacement of the original.
Original would have been the number one option...had I found an original one, that's why I started this thread.
Since that doesn't seen to be available anywhere, I think the j-nut is the easiest solution....
I'm not in the mood to "make" one.....no one would see it and no one would appreciate the time spent making it,
especially my wife, she'd probably think I was the nut, trying to make a 3/8 square nut.
A workable item that costs less than a dollar is the solution.

What you have is a weld nut. Factory way of applying the nuts during production. They used a positive and negative anvil, pressure and a resistance welder. Process is still in use. Best bet would be going weld it back in.

I ended up using a speed nut...quick and easy.
Isn't visible and worked well.
The weld nut was missing so I couldn't weld it back in as suggested.
Managed to find one 1969 Chevrolet turn signal housing, but one of the small 3/8" square pressed in nuts is missing.
I have no idea what it's called or where I can get a replacement for the missing one.
Anybody know anything about these nuts?
caged nut. or captured nut.

That was a thought I had as well Don.
Because the square hole is close to the edge finding a j-nut that centers close to the center of the square shouldn't be an issue.
...and they are cheap. Most body shop supply stores have racks of different j-nuts...on line different ones sell at 100 for $12.00.
And with some tension on the metal, and the screw through it the J-nut won't go anywhere.
I believe J-nuts are hardened spring type steel.
So I'll go that route....as Ted says, not much stress on what's keeping the pieces together.
Also gives the option of taking the turn signal housing off if necessary, without losing the nut.
Here's another type of J nut
Original would have been the number one option...had I found an original one, that's why I started this thread.

Thanks for the information.
