I'm going to cut out and replace small sections on the 65's front fenders. Probably 1.25" x 16"along the top of the fenders on the hood gap sides, not visible with the hood closed. The metal is rotten and blistered open. Probably sat for years with wet debris stuck in the gap.
It's rusted to the point it really should be cut out and new metal welded in. It's a double layer, the outer fender metal is gone, and the underlying support (hopefully) should be fair. Shouldn't be too bad a job. But again, no point in going further without doing this. The firewall seam has to be repaired as well for about 20" of it's length. So really, just these little baby steps needing done as I go along.
After the metalwork, how should the bare metal be prepped before the filler?
This will all be rattle can, and the final appearance isn't really too important, just no visible holes.
I'll be taking pictures as this transpires, and will for sure need your advice and opinions on materials and the like...I'm no bodyman!!

i would sand blast it then do body fill and the back side of the patch sand blast prime it then when dry use caulking to seal it up

Thanks Barry, I should have mentioned that I'm doing this with the fenders on the car.
Here's a shot of the area, we'll see what it involves after I cut away the outer layer. A poor attempt to cover it up was done once before..
Well, you're gonna have to pull that cowl tag to fix the seam. Might as well make it a V8 body and an M20 car right away while it's off!

Actually the tag should be fine in place. I'm going to cut a straight line just along the rust from left to right. Clean it all up. Bring a thin section in from the back. Weld along the line. Drill holes along the bottom section. Plug weld through those holes to the new section.
Treat the rest of the seam with rust converter.
Hide it all with seam sealer. Paint. I would love to keep the Oshawa stencils. I'll try, but it'll be tough.
