Well without seeing the car I can only say that thing will take without much work anything from a Chevy six cylinder three speed to a Chevy big block 4 speed and everything in between. Is just a question of what do you want to do and how much money you want to spend.

thanks for the quick reply, how about a used 350 and a 3 speed auto? I hear i can put a high rise and 4 barell on for not too much money. What would you recommend for 5 grand?
She looks like she deservers to be out in the light. Off that dirt.

An LS with an overdrive automatic (700R/4L60E) would be ideal, but I'd recommend prioritizing the extra cog in the transmission over going more modern with the engine. Any Gen 1 SBC will be a pretty straightforward bolt-in, LSs require some mods, including mounts, fuel supply, exhaust, etc.
Be mindful, if you're on a budget, that getting sporty with the output may put you over your cooling system's capacity, which can blow a hole in your budget. And even a cheap, hot, small-block will need better breathing at both ends to realize its full capability.

Thanks a lot for the great info, maybe just a used 350 with a 700R tranny and an exhaust upgrade? Prob put headers on anyway. I think the first thing is disc brake in the front and suspension, wheel bearings, tires etc. Hopefully the 283 willl run for a while and i can keep it drivable till i do an engine swap

Sound like the right way to go. These cars are modern enough (Other than seat belts/airbags etc.) to be quite comfortable to drive but upgrading the engine to a bit bigger with an overdrive will allow you to really cruise and and the ugrade to disc will really upgrade the brake's safety on these fairly heavy cars.
All parts are easy to come by if you just look up 1966 Impala as all the drivetrain stuff is Chevy.
Everything else is just icing on the cake!

I've got a front bumper, a grille, the parts that create the vertical headlight details, and a few other bits and pieces

Not everyone is cut out for the money, time, experience and patience required to go through and old car. Of course it could just be a slow process to find the time and parts to get motivated to start.
