I am thinking of changing my 2sp powerglide to a 200R4.
The interior is original and I dont want to change the 2sp console.
does anyone know of reasons not too?

I changed my 66 Grande with a Powerglide console to a 700r4 and I was able to leave it looking factory. The only visible change is a repro shift quadrant that has the OD markings. You have to do some work underneath to make sure the tranny shift detents are compatible with the console shifter and for me I had to have the driveshaft shortened as it is a longer 700r4.
Totally worth the work for any lengthy cruising.

Also did the 700 conversion on my 65 and as stated, worth it for cruising. The console shift detent and ID plate was available from "Shiftworks" and looks factory, but don't know about Acadians.

Same here...the Beau has a 700R, and the (replica) console has the "O" detent, plus D, 2 and 1. Looks like the General did it, and going from 3 to 4 cogs, with overdrive, was a HUGE boost; can't imagine what the transformation will be like from a 'Glide to a 700R. Go for it!

Any time you can add overdrive is grand. Provided you're driving the car a fair bit.

Awesome, thanks for the input.
I figured as much and look forward to the longer cruising at lower rpm.
Ill send a note when I complete project over winter.

Take pictures and notes along the way. Then post them when youre done.
Make interesting reading for others sitting on the fence about doing it.

here's the 1st gear ratios for the mentioned trany
newer P.G.--1.76
200R = 2.74
700R =3.06
I had a 700r in my 64 chevelle with a 3.08 diff
350 stock cam motor, in the city i couldn't use
O.D. but on the h-way it had amazing gas
mileage..i would consider in your case using a
vacuum guage and shift accordingly.

well I have 3:55 and a 350HP 350 so Im running at 3000rpm when doing 50mph.
Drives me nuts when everyone on the highway is passing me:)
It will be a winter project and its been 30 years since I got under a car so if people are on the fence and following me, I'm not sure what side of the fence they will fall too.

For my 66 Grande with a 3:31 gear and pretty much stock height tires I am cruising at 110-115 kph at 2300-2400 rpm in OD.
Much quieter and way less wear on the old 396.
See the short video.
