Find a Canadian Pontiac shop manual set for your car, the set would be a 1961 Shop Manual, 1964 Supplement, and Id also suggest a 1964 Chevy Assembly Manual as I dont think youll find one for a 1964 Pontiac. There is a good troubleshooting section in the manual for the powerglide, your 64 would be the aluminum glide so the 1964 supplement would cover it, 1961 was cast iron powerglide only.
Cliff, a Powerglide is a 2 speed automatic, PRNDL from 58/59 up, earlier was PNDLR.

As far as I know, Chevy never installed a Quadrajet on a 283 from the factory so I hope it works out for you.
i went through a fair bit of trouble to find the right manifold and aircleaner for a 4GC carb to stick on my 66 Beaumont with a 283 Powerglide as they came with that in 64. So far its ok but I haven't worked out the choke quite right yet. Otherwise it seems to be a good fit for the engine and makes a very gratifying WOOOO sound when you punch it done into the four barrels. (Goes OK too.) Unfortunately I seem to be missing the upper linkage for the kick down and cant find one in my parts cars so I will have to set that up when I find one. They used to be everywhere!

If I remember correctly when the throttle is wide open the kickdown linkage should be at the end of its travel. I think up until 1964 it was a solid mechanical linkage, but starting with the Quadrajet it was still mechanical but used a slot with a return spring at the carburetor. Also make sure the lower rod is connected. The balls will wear and become loose and the rod will fall off.

It's been a long time since I had a Powerglide and I was beginning to doubt my memory.
Interesting note on the shift quadrant set up

I was told by a mechanic that when you put the throttle to the floor, the kickdown linkage should be almost touching the back of the block. Any thoughts!
This looks like the way mine is. Wondering if the gaskets for the carburetor are making it sit a bit higher. I must be missing something

From a Chevy form I searched on Google,

Loosen the TV bracket on the shaft sticking out of the transmission. Rotate the bracket counter clockwise slightly before tightening the clamp. At full throttle, the TV must push through the detent. This is the slight resistance you feel under your right foot when you floor the accelerator. If it's not there. Your TV is out of adjustment producing the symptoms you're describing. Keep rotating the TV clamp counter clock wise until it gives you the passing gear kickdown you want. Again, full throttle should push the valve through the detent built into the transmission. On a V8 (265/283) full throttle up shift is at about 55 mph. Full throttle downshift should be available up to 48 mph or so. The six is a little different.

My brother's 307 has the same problem so I am very interested of a solution

If all you did was upgrade from a 2 BBL to a Quadrajet and didn't make any changes at the transmission itself, then you may be able to solve your problem by getting the linkage to the carb for a 4 BBL. You will likely have to modify it to connect to the carb because Quadrajets weren't around then and have a different setup. When I upgraded from a 2 BBL to a 4GC I bought the linkage for the 4 BBL 4GC. I don't have it all assembled yet but not expecting any issues. if you removed the TV bracket I can send you the shop manual page advising how to set it up. Basically, rotate the TV through full detent until it bottoms out, then measure the distance from the centre of the hole in the top of the lever on the bracket to the centre of the bolt on the bottom front of the transmission cover. The distance should be 3.6".
Changed 2 barrel to a quadrajet on my 64 Parisienne. Have tried adjusting it but can't seem to get it to go into passing gear. Any thoughts?
Car is a 283
And the kickdown worked fine before with the 2 barrel I assume?
is powerglide a 2 speed with "R" for reverse?
Is there a 3rd gear in powerglide?
Maybe this will help. It is from the factory assembly manual and shows how to set the kickdown.
(For a 1966 two barrel, but the principle should be the same.)
