Just a quick question. I have one of the two rods that has broken. Is it spring steel and can it be welded?
Its a clean break and will join nicely.

No expert, but I think butt welding it would just anneal (soften) the spring steel rod at the joint. It may eventually just bend (twist) at the join. Or it might be fine.
A better way might be to make some kind of tube sleeve with 4 welded on nuts. The rod ends could slide into it and be pinched by bolts tightened through those nuts.
Regardless, if welding you might want to use a short section of L channel across the rod to back and support the weld joint.

Cant weld it. Takes the torsion out of them. They are brittle as is and any welding increases it. Just replace it. Theyre cheap to buy new

One of mine broke a few years ago. I bought a pair from National Parts Depot in Detroit. They were 1967 Chevelle SS parts.
They fit in the Beaumont perfect, but they would not hold my trunk lid open. I measured the diameter and they were .035 " smaller in diameter.
I took one new rod out and replaced it with an old one. It worked, the trunk lid stays open now.
