64 Beaumont power steering

Does anybody know if the small power steering box (  I think it's a 605 from 78 to 80 "A" body) will match up to the pitman arm for standard steering ? My brother in law in restoring a 64 Beaumont rag. We were told that this box will take the place of a manual box and match up to the steering arm ( the shaft dimension and splines are suppose to be smaller ) I guess that it is hard to find a p/s box for a 64 in good shape.

Hope someone can help me out !

Kevin

most gm boxes will interchange, but not the pitman arms.try searching 'A car online interchange'.very good info on all parts .theres a highlighted title when you scroll down that has 'chassis' .Ive used this site to put p/s and tall spindle disc brakes on my 65 beaumont wagon.

Hi Kevin, I changed my manual steering to power steering a couple of years ago, If I remember right the power steering shaft is bigger in diameter than the manual shaft. You will need to get a pitman arm with the smaller hole for your steering arm and the larger hole for the newer box. they also make one with a bigger hole for the steering arm so make sure you check your steering arm, on a 64 it should be the smaller one. I got a used one on Ebay, they can be found at any supension shop new or used. These things never ware out, your used one off your old box is actualy worth a few bucks, drag racers are putting the used manual boxes in thier cars to save weight.

If I read your reply correctly, I think you are explaining there is 2 different sizes of steering linkage on 64-67 A body cars. That is good, because a lot of people don't know about that. You can use either one, as long as all the parts are matched. The easy way to tell is the diameter of the center steering link. I know one is 7/8" and if I remember right, the other size is 13/16".
