I do know 65-69 Canadian big Pontiac is the identical pan as Chevrolet 65-70. It shares no parts in the pan with the USA car. But I'm willing to bet, both are identical in width, rocker to rocker.
Maybe the 69 Impala pictured had it's 4sp added later? Or the picture is a little decieving.

Here's a shot of a 69 SS. I can see that the shifter is oriented to the drivers side at least 2 or more inches, judging by the woodgrain on the console. 2178701755_79b7a7e03e_o.jpg

I have picture of Daves shifter and ring, and shifter from big US Pontiac (red), and picture Dave sent me of 66 4 speed  Is the the US 66 car, and the 69 Chev wider? ,as they look more centered..Tan interior shifter is 66 and looks like its closer to side  ???

carl 2,
shifter boot and ring in my bel air isn't original '69 parts, i believe it's a chevelle or '65-'66 b-body. the '69 ring has a more square shape to it.

I remember seeing some GM 4 speed shifter handles that had a jog in them to centre the shifter handle more when it came into the car........Maybe, that is why one seems more centred than the other.

TODAYS TRIVIA;     I have a cross arm/shaft and I have a new ball, for each end..  One end of my shaft, has oval area for ball to pivot on (bellhousing side)   The other end, that fastens to bracket ,on frame,   has a ball in it!    and I thought it should come out....sooo Is it correct for the bracket end, ball to be in it?   I looked on e-bay,and found some for sale, and they show picture with ball in  it!    V8carl-no trans..

Here's a Canadian 65-70 big car diagram and group mpc parts list for the rod.
Looks like there's a ball stud (14) and replaceable seat (13) on the frame side of the lever shaft. They each have there own part #'s within group 0.851, yet they show them together and not exploded in the diagram.
I'd say the ball stud should stay in place in the seat.

If I understand your question correctly, the end you have now with a ball (with a stud sticking out of it) is the frame side, as shown in the pic. There is a wire clip (snap ring) holding that seat in. You can remove the ring, then the seat, then the ball and then another seat if I am remembering it right. There is a concave seat for each side of the ball. Your local dealer should have, or can get them under 3743349 as shown in the parts pic.

The other end has a seat that just slides into the tube, then you install that end of the tube onto the ball that is on the bellhousing. It doesn't need a seat on each side of the ball.

This is going by memory and using the parts picture as reference, subject to change without notice.....................!

Did this solve your mystery?
