On my 65 BeauCamino the gas gauge goes from empty to full when I turn on the ignition but otherwise it never goes down. I have driven it and had to refill it so I am using gas.
What do I need to check or look at? How do I determine if it's the sender or the gauge? Any ideas?
My gas gauge reads very full all the time. 73SC can't believe the gas mileage I get. I checked ground on my gas tank. I connected a meter between the actual tank and frame and had continuity. I took the the other wire off and connected it to ground which made the gauge drop down to empty.
The gauge on my Laurentian would read full until I got below half a tank then it would read proplerly. Turned out to be the sending unit. I think 90 percent of the time it's the cause for gas gauge problems. I made a "test unit" out of an old radio volume control. To use it I hook one terminal (the middle one on the volume control) to the lead that goes to the sending unit, and the other end to ground and turn the knob. The gauge should move accordingly. That's how I verified the sender on my car. Todd
How about this idea.....get a new sending unit, the one you have is probably 38 years old anyway, then we can wire it all up properly with a good ground and life should be good again. It will also mean that I only have to crawl under your car one more time to help you get this fixed! If you order the sender today we can fix it next weekend, no car jobs on May two four!
