Finally crossed the border this morning and picked up my headers, carb and a few other parts... and put the motor in... passenger header (summit 1.75") will need some massaging to fit against the crossmember and i'll have to work out some brackets for the PS pump, but its coming along... after almost 20 years of driving it around it with an SBC this mild fat rat fills the gap between the fenders a little nicer... hopefully i can resolve these few things and get it out for ride!!
Carl I should have popped by (is his name ken?) to look at his power steering brackets!hahaha! This might be pushing it, but would you be able to ask him if he has a spare set? I'd like to test fit them with that pump at bought at the swap meet before ordering a set from Year One.... of course having a dad who's a machinist he's already onto fabbing something... "why buy it when you can make it!?"
I'm itching to get it out, before this fast summer flies by!...
I know he doesn't have a spare set because I had to help him find a set when he was putting his engine together. Funny thing is, 25 years ago when I was helping a friend put a 396 into a 66 Camino. At that time, Brian sold him a power steering setup for $35!!!

Looks like the underhood shot of that 68 that sold from PEI.
As usual, you have a "good eye" that was a shot ,to show, how his motor will look, of course with a little clean up.. The 427 was actually sold at a Chevrolet dealer, but will fit a Cdn Pontiac.. I recently aquired the Rat, and Todd is buying it on the monthly (dont tell the wife) plan. lol I got him a "deal" on financing. $50.00 per month for 9 years (including interest) Last payment must have something to do with a party, as they mentioned balloons?
By massaging you mean with a big hammer? I just bought some flow-tech ceramic coated headers and cant get the passenger side to fit . I think my frame might be sagging
yeah the good ol' hammer massage, maybe some heat... there was some welding slag on the crossmember right where the header hits so that didnt help either... i was thinking of trying to set the motor back 1/2" that would solve it too...
where do yours hit? its too bad they dont make em fit proper, there was no reason they couldnt have on the design, the front two tubes didnt have to angle forward on the down leg at all... i might cut the tube and set it back a little instead of denting it... i'd sure hate to bang on a pair of ceramic ones!
here's a pic of them, only 3 hours old! ...gotta love the paint that they put on them, comes off in your hands... once i get them fit i'm going to blast them and repaint with VHT cast iron manifold paint...
Mine hit in about the same place. I'm going to mesure my frame this week and figure it out from there. I hope i dont have to dent them but ive already scrached them. Nice engine compartment. I plan on cleaning up this mess next winter.
Carl, Cheaper yes, but fun, no! That car needs a big block..
I was just razzing you. I have been a die hard big block guy for a long time. When I took the 427 out of my Acadian, I think that was the first time since about 1978 or so that I didn't own a big block Canadian Pontiac.

On other brands that first tube is beside the second tube not in front... anyways i had to bend it in a lot to get it to fit... but i've blasted them and repainted, and the engine should be going in this week... my brackets are coming from Ausleys and Summit this week... also upgrading the sway bars on the car and bought chrome wheel well mouldings...not sure if i'll like them on the car but i'll see how they look...
i have some 1.75" mandrel bent tubing from when i modified my sbc headers for angle plugs, so this winter i'll pull that header and re-shape that tube, i'll have to practice my mig skills its been a few years....
yes i do, i picked it up at the swap meet, from a BBC truck though, i ordered all the brackets for the PS from Ausleys, and the Alternator brackets from Summit... they had the best prices on those parts... sickening the upcharge locally (3 brackets: $80 at summit, $180 at softys) i also bought the stock bracket to mount the resevoir to the fender, chrome armrest bases etc...
Carl, you'll probably know this!... the PS pump i picked up has a press fit pulley, where my original one has the keyway/nut.... i think the press fit only started in the mid 70s, so i'm assuming the guts were rebuilt on this pump at one time? since i have a chrome pulley for the keyway style i'm probably going to disassemble the one i bought and put my other guts in to use the 67 vintage keyway/nut pulley.... have you ever pulled one apart? do you think i can just re-use the o-ring??
while i have the engine on the stand, i'm trying to run my plug wires under the headers (versus over the valve covers -which is easier!) and up at the back of the heads... its going to take some extra work/retainers etc to make it fit well, but it will look nice and clean not having the wires draped over the valve covers...
I have not had the pleasure of pulling a pump apart, but I know in our dealership here if a pump comes apart, it always gets a new oring. I would think it is risky reassembling it with the old one.
Do you know the difference between the truck and car can? I have one,but don't know which it is.

I think the only difference is the return line spigot configuration... i do not know the difference to see it, but i could send you a pic of mine...and perhaps find one off an original chevelle... the resevoir is identical... if the only difference is the return spigot then i assume you can solder (or maybe its pressed in?) a more correct looking one on and all of sudden you add $150 to the value of the pump!!
