In Ontario you can purchase the used car package from the Ministry of Transportation. It lists all previous owners and the town they lived in at the time. It's a good start. Not sure if there is anything like that in other provinces.

Manitoba Public Insurance will not disclose any info about previous owners.  Security risk.  I am very surprised that ontario will give out that info.
All they can tell is if there were privious accident insurance claims.
And i don't think there records go back very far.

And Dave, they won't even tell us accident claims. All they will tell us is if it has been written off or not. Damage that was repaired they won't disclose, unless that changed very recently.

Ontario MTO offices are actually only suppose to sell the used vehicle information package to the owner for the purpose of resale-we used to have to fill out a form stating who we were to purchase it-not anymore. The package does list the previous Ontario registered owners but I believe its their current city according to their driver's license. The dealers are not to disclose any previous owner's information.

the ontario package only goes back so far. when i registered my 63, they had no info on it. i had to get an appraisal to verify the vin numbers. i am the second owner and it had expired ont plates for 73. the only reason i know i'm the second owners is that the car has sat up at a relatives farm and it belonged to his great aunts who now lives in NB

But only as far back as the car has been continuously registered.  For example, if the car was off the road and did not have valid plates for a few years, they will only give you info back to the last registered owner and all the previous owners get wiped off the system.  If the car has not been registered for I believe 5 years, all of the records get wiped off the system and it is if the car had never been registered in Ontario.

Before the "Used Vehicle Information Package" came out, you could do a search and find out all the previous owners, their driver's license numbers and their home addresses!!!  That's because back in the good 'ol days, the only thing anyone was worried about was whether there was lien on the car and they wanted people to be able to do as complete a search as possible.  Back then it was privacy-shmiracy!

Now you can get it any time through one of those Service Ontario kiosks.  All you need is a credit card and you can get just about anything you want....
Unless the previous owner's name is something like Smith, it still isn't that hard to track down the previous owner if you have a little patience.

Hi Carl, I think you can 'buy' the damage report... I got one a few years ago for the wifes car which was a write off, but i received it from 'a friend'... it was handy checklist when checking the car over, so i could ask about what parts were replaced or fixed....

I think that was only because it's a write off. I am pretty sure if you try to find out about fixed damage, you can't.
