Hi there,I'm having a problem w/ the wiring in my '66 Strato-Chief.I put an Ididit tilt in it (4 speed of 'course) and now I can't get my signal,or back-up lights to work.I should explain what transpired before this problem occurred.You see there was this little BLACK wire coming from the engine side of the junction block and I thought naturally is was a ground so I did just that. When I hooked my battery cables up i saw that my interior was filling full of smoke!Needless to say I was horrified! I chased the torched wires to my battery gauge in the dash.Hence now I have no signals or back-up lights.I know they worked before this happened because I just finished installing new back-up lights in the bumper and I also made sure they worked from my new reverse switch on the shifter.Any imput or advise would be greatlly appreciated.I have alot of time and money into this car and I would really like to drive it.By the way this is a 2 door post car and I put in a 427BBC,bench 4 speed,Hotchkis suspension,new Sierra Fawn interior.Blah blah blah the list goes on.I'm from Calgary and I haven't seen another one YET!Thanks and what a great site.I also have the '68 Acadian that I'm cloning a Motion car,JL8and all!

It seems to me there is someone here who has a 66 service manual. Hopefully they will show up and are able to copy the wiring diagram for you.
Have you replaced any wires you found that smoked? Did you determine what that black wire actually was for?
I guess by process of elimination you could see at what point your wiring fried by unplugging connectors along the way and feeding power to the b/u lights and signal bulbs.
Is it maybe as simple as a blown fuse? I know on some GM vehicles those 2 circuits use a common fuse.

Fusable link maybe?I've put my test light to the fuse box and I get power everytime.The signal switch in the column isn't activating anything .I have Hazards but no signal action.Like no sound of the signals.Does that make any sense.

I'm not at all familiar with the wiring that they put in the Ididit columns. Is there a way that you can check if you have power for your signal flasher (assuming it's a separate flasher from the hazards)?
Does the column that you put in have the same plug as the old one (i.e. it's a straight plug in with no wiring to do)?

The Ididit columns have a plug that adapts and connects to the original harness.It also has a single flasher for the Hazard lights.And all that plugs into the fuse box .So it sounds like i have no power to my actual signal mechanism.That would account for no sound.Yes ,a wiring diagram would make things alot easier.And I have no brake lights also.What a mess!I've been looking at this car in this shape for a year now and it sure has got me stumped.

I know when my horn went in the El C I traced the wire through the column with a circuit tester. Found a open circuit halfway down. Replaced the spring for the horn and Bob became my uncle again.
I would try the simple things first....Fuse and Flasher unit
