i dont know which way to go. The 59 has a 283 all original with the roch. 2 bl. carb. Now i want a car that is reliable enough to drive and i dont really care for more horsepower cause its never gonna be a fast car anyways.I have the four barrel intake from my 305 and my q-jet from my trans am. Is it worth putting that on and rebuilding that 4bl. or just rebuilding the 2 brl. Im having troubles with the 2, a little sticky plus i imagine it really needs an overhaul. I like the original look to the engine and the car will someday be put back to original colors as well. What do you guys think?
I have messed with original condition cars before and find that I usually regret it. A 2bbl is basically the front half of a Q-Jet and flows near 500 cfm. A 4bbl will assist at highway speeds but I don't think it will make a big differrence to your enjoyment. If you want nice sound you can get adapters for a 2bbl to 4bbl neck so you can run an open element which would help. Spend your money on a nice dual exhaust instead.
i did make an open element for it and i put headers with 2.25 collectors on. i will put the rest of the dual system on when i get the cash. Is rebuilding a 2b carb hard? Im pretty good with detailed finicky little bits so i hope i can do it myself.I just have to find a store that sells the rebuild kit. Thanks 73.
Carquest should be able to get you a rebuild kit. They will likely want the number off your carb though. As for rebuilding, a 2bbl is pretty easy. If you have any doubts, take lots of pics as you disassemble. If your short term memory is as bad as mine, you'll need them. Print the pics out and use them for reference. The rebuild kits usually have a blown up illustration of the carb. Buy a good carb cleaner or degreaser and soak the parts overnight. You'll also likely need something like a toothbrush to get the caked on crap off.
Before you buy a kit, I'll try to get Todd to check the part #'s on 2 GM original NOS kits I have for 2 bbl. Rochesters that came out of a closed up Pontiac dealer. If I have the right one=$20 +shipping should cover it. Earl

also, a source of compressed air is very helpful to blow out the passages.
the # on the tag is A B9 7013082 is this the # or is there one stamped somewhere i dident see? Was playing with it today and the throttle plate keeps closing when i press on the gas pedal and when i turn off the car and press the gas pedal the plate closes again even when the engine is warmed up. I see that its sticking on the little stepped or notched piece and ive tried to bend the bar a bit but its still doing it. I wish i knew the technical terms cause i dont really know how to describe it.
Go Cherry bombs baaby. Actually I think I still have a Cherry Bomb that is still in the box that I bought for when I was going to split manifold my 54 Chevy. Never got around to it and sold it. I'll sell it cheeeep.
when getting a kit for my carb, the tag # was no good, parts guy needed the actual # stamped on the base of the carb.write it down, might save you a trip back home to retrive it.

thks for the tip 1964canso. I am going with cherrybombs with 2 2.5 in and out and then dump them just before the back tire for now and then maybe i will see how that sounds and if its too loud or i get too much fumes i'll throw it to the bumber and maybe even put some flame throwers in?? my brother really wants me to do that!! I fooled around with the carb some more and now its really out of wack!! Is there a reset button??!! If eeluddy doesent have the rebuild kit then i will go grab one after work tommorrow.
heres the engine when i first got the car.And that open element is just the top plate from my trans am breather and the element is actually screwed on it for now while i cut the bottom apart of the 2 barrel breather.
there nothin i cant do with a liitle spray paint. The whole car is tremclad matte black spraypaint. Most people dont believe me the i spaypainted the body, its funny.
I went to a guys house tonight and picked up a whole pile of car parts, as well as a lot of other junk. Included in the pile is two in the box glass packs. The price would be great, but I think shipping would kill the sale. I can check on shipping if you like though.
