As some of you may know, this Harvey's was THE hangout for car guys looking for a little "action" in TO in the 70's and 80's. The decals I have are static cling so they go on th INSIDE of the window and won't get ruined by washing, the elements, etc. PLUS, you can peel off and re-use any time you want. Nice piece of Canadian car nostalgia celebrating a true Canadian icon. $5 each. BUT, there is a pre-condition - you must purchase one of Todd's Canadian Poncho decals FIRST in order to qualify!

Hillar, I'm in for one and as you know I own one of every thing Todd already offered us. We can settle up Tuesday when I see you at the LEAFS game, the hottest ticket in town that you snagged for us! Yippie ! Leafs going to own Canes, Tuesday!!
Yes, that was one of the Harvey's hamburger restaurants. This location at the intersection of Jane St. and the 401 Highway in Toronto became quite famous as a car hangout. Because of its proximity to the 400 highway which had just been opened in the early 70's and was mostly quite wide open because it ran through the middle of nowhere, it was perfect for "informal speed contests". Ah, those were the days, guys would set up contests and off they'd go, returning slightly later to rehash the event over a burger. I have a great article about this Harvey's from the magazine that used to come in the Sunday Star. It was written in about 1979 if I recall correctly. That was when the "action" was at it's peak and the decal came out - you would never see that in today's politically correct world. The cars that showed up there were serious machines and a lot of money changed hands over the years, this was no palatial cruise in place like what predominates now, this was serious racing for cashola. It was a different era back then. As the 80's came to a close it was pretty well over. There was now so much development along the 400, the wide open spaces and light traffic that had facilitated much of the action was gone. Obviously the attitude of the local constabulary had changed as well. The land this Harvey's sat on with its huge parking lot became too valuable and was sold for commercial development.

When I was growing up in Gimli MB there was a place called Gimli Drive in right across the road from our house . On the weekend there would be music playing and cars racing down the road in front of the house till 3:00 am. I would sneak out of my room and watch out the living room window. I still think of it when I go past there. It was a real blast and one memory I will never forget.

Two memories come to mind about that location:
1. Occasionally, guys would roll in with trailered, unlicensed vehicles. You can guess the rest.
2. Wolf Packs. Guys would pair off, two by two, up on the highway and slow all traffic down to a crawl. Then, the first two would go......followed a few seconds later by the second two.....and then the third.......etc.
Crazy, fun days. OPP Commissioner Fantino would have a stroke these days.
my brotherinlaw hung out there for years, my sister has the white and orange jackets from harveys still ,good childhood memories!!!
Wow, she has one of the jackets? Do you have any pics? A friend of mine was looking into reproducing those jackets last summer but the cost was just prohibitively expensive - try finding anyone who offers a white satin or nylon type baseball jacket any more.

did your friend try avon sportswear in toronto, thay made the originals?
do they still exist? he tried everywhere.
to attach photos there is a box at the bottom of the post page that says "Attach Image(s)" that will allow you to browse what you have stored on you computer and then just upload.
If you have a photohosting site like photobucket you just put: img with square brackets around it, the URL of the pictureand then [/img] at the end and that should do the trick.

OK, I'll see if I can dig up Rick's email address and pass it on to you but I know he conducted a pretty thorough search of all the sportswear companies in Ontario last summer. We could find the right material, that lightweight nylon stuff, it's just nobody carries it in white any more. I guess it gets dirty too easily and just has fallen out of favour with all of the jacket makers.

OK, it all comes down to money with these thing usually. For our 50th anniversay of the hockey association I had replica jerseys made up the same as worn in 1951, not that scratchy old wool but new material. Anyway, Todd says he has sold 12 denim shirts so far, so cost to produce and demand may be issues.

I haven't placed my order yet. Just trying to decide how many of each colour and how many I will put away as "investments". I'm sure they will outpace the stock market over time!
