1953 Powerglide question


I know its a Chevy, but its stock in a Poncho.

I have a 1953 Powerglide in my 1954 Pathfinder. I have connected all the fluid hoses and replaced a damaged servo cover (the trans was dropped). Everything else is as it was when the car was running and mobile! When the engine is running it will go into gear and the tires will rotate while up on a lift, but there is no drive or considerable power (I can stop it with two hands) - certainly not enough to move the vehicle. While geared in reverse, the tires continue to roll forward. There is no considerable leaks. There is fluid in the trans. The gearing was confirmed the whole length -from the column to the engine mechanical-relay to the trans. The problem seems to be in the trans. Any ideas?

Sounds like it's a problem with the trans or torque convertor. Is the fluid level up? How far did the trans fall when it was dropped?

Exactly..

Not sure on these older units but try the brake on and back and forth between reverse and forward thing for a while to suck fluid into the converter..

Not sure - I will find out. But when it fell it broke a corner off of the servo cover, so probably ~12".
Not knowing much about trans - what could break inside with a 12" fall? There is no unholy-sounding noises coming from the trans... nothing grinding.

Does anyone have a diagram or photo of what a torque converter with the bolts in looks like?
All my research led me to believe that the torque converter bolts ARE in, but the kid who sold it to me said they were not. I could see no evidence of anything missing...except of course, the wheels don't push.

I will try the reverse forward thing tonight. The gears were probably only gone through about 5 times while testing it today.
