Bet you're thinking, "what kind of idiot doesn't know an oil filter when he sees one?"
I'm feeling kinda stupid right now, casue I went to change my oil and I can't find the oil filter. I have in my possession a filter to be inserted into a cannister type container that supposedly is for my car, but I don't know where to put it!
here are a few pics of the engine area that hoepefully will help you point it out to me. I believe it is a 261, 145 hp, straight six engine.
so, that being the case, is there a special oil I should be using? I assume that it must be a type that does not carry "dirt" to the filter, but allows "dirt" to fall to the bottom? am I right?
web site quote... During the 1955-62 Canadian Pontiac application, the lifters were the hydraulic type, the cam gear was fiber not aluminum, and it did not have the full flow oil filter. These Canadian made 261's did not add the full flow filter in 1958 as in the U.S.
I had a big magnet stuck to the oil pan of my 54. Not sure if it did any good but it gave me piece of mind since I didn't have an oil filter. I'd simply remove it just as I was about to drain the oil.
The accessory oil filters can be found new or used. They are on ebay lots. I would just get a used one from any 235-261 six cylinder. When removing just remember to keep the 2 small ubolt style mounting bolts. New oil line hoses are available from any 55-57 Chevy parts dealer .
Looks like someone modified the air cleaner and valve cover on your 261 for a pcv system.
could be that they modified it. I am not a mechanic type, but I did grow up with 4-H where the motto was learn to do by doing. So I'm learning on and about my car as I go along. I know very little. Does your comment meant that someone replaced the valve cover? What is a PCV sysyem? Does that have to do with the oil pan sitting father away from the carburetor and having an extension to the carb?
i use to have one on the original 235 that was in my truck. i couldn't find filters so it was recommend that i use toilet paper rolls. those were the days
My 239 cubic inch flathead six does not have an external filter either, had me confused at first, then read the manual, the oilpan apparently has some form of oil separator in it
