So i have this nice heavy transmission and it is leaking at the drain plug. So im looking on the net for pans and then realizing as im looking at photos of mine that there is no pan!! The plug is striped and ive tried some thread tape, and some spacers to hope it would catch but its not working. I dont want to drop the tranny yet and the only thing i can think to fix it would be re-tap it, even though i dont have a tap that big(and how do you keep metal shaveings out) or, weld a nut on there and use another bolt. Any suggestions? Oh, and i do have a 350 turbo trans here that works, but not sure if it would bolt up right or if i would have to shorten the driveshaft.?
would i have to be fearfull of the trans getting too hot with my wire feed welder? I know to just do little tack welds here and there but would it hurt the tranny junk inside?
you can buy oil pan oversize/repair plugs at a parts store that might work. wire feed won't hurt it. i installed a 350 trans in my '61 impala, in place of a cast iron PG, frt driveshaft needs to be shortened 3"
thanks guys. I will try the sillicone first and look for the oversize plugs. The trans works fine so i will only replace it if it tinkers out on me. just trying to get these types of things done so im ready for the season. How much would it cost to shorten the small driveshaft? Was yours a column shift car?
cost me $125. back in '95 to shorten the frt. and rebalance the complete shaft. i cut and rewelded the column linkage, used some of the 350 trans linkage to make it all work.
don't be shy, drill it-install a heli coil-wash it through a bit -and fill it back up-if it gets shavings it'll be a while before it goes and you have the turbo 350 for back up

Thats what i would do too. Shavings will flushout easy. You wont be able to do any welding on it as it is cast IRON. The th350 swap is easy if you have a V8, if you have the old 235/261 it won't be fun with adapters and all.
