Power Steeering Box


Hi,

I am new to this site and really glad to have found it. I am in the middle of a 56 Pontiac Laurientian and I want to put in power steering. I am looking for something that will prettty much bolt in. Short of ordering one from Danchuk in the USA for $500.00 usd I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get one in Canada?

There are now a couple of different power steering boxes you can use. There are complete kits available from the classic chevy dealers in Canada. Did you check out a rack and pinion setup instead of the 605 box conversion?

Hi, I've seen the rack and pinion setups but I already have my frontend rebuild kit and a lowering kit with disc brakes, I even have a new chrome steering column. So the 605 kit would be what I need. I've just had a difficult time trying to locate a Canadian seller but many USA dealers. Any ideas where I might find one?

Apparently the CPP 500 box is much better than a 605.  All the vendors for these boxes are US, I believe the CPP box is actually made in the U.S where most are made off shore.  I too am resto-moding a 56 Laurentian, you probably already know how rare these Laurentians are. In 2004 I built a 57 Chevy 150 2 door sedan. I went the working mans way and did a disc brake conversion using parts you can buy from your local NAPA store.  I too, at the time, felt like upgrading to power steering. A friend of mine at the time suggested I try and locate a "Poor Man's Power Steering" kit.  I looked into it and bought a N.O.S from Gary Automotive in Edmonton 1-780-433-1425.  The kit was made by MOOG, don't remember what it cost but it wasn't expensive.  It replaces the stock idler arm bushings with bearings.  I worked very well, I was pleasantly surprised. The only effort I had to made was slowing to a stop while turning into a very tight parking space.  It had good road feel, no bump steer or any other problems.  Keep in mind I had also performed the following front end work,  1968 Camaro small block front coil springs brand new with one coil removed(gives these cars good stance with no bottoming out), new upper and lower control arm bushings, new ball joints, new inner and outer tie rods, cut the steering shaft off to accept a ragjoint coupling (79 Camaro) installed a 1977 chev van tilt column and used a 15" Berlinetta steering wheel.  Send me some pic's of your 56.   Cheers.......Lennox.

I bought the CPP 500 box for my 63 Impala. Got it from Classic Bowties in Alberta. Tony the owner advertises in the Old Car Trader. Don't remember the price but it was reasonable, and I bought it when the dollar was at par.

I've seen that "Poor man's power steering kit" available. I think it was on eBay and thought about it but I think I want to do the steering box. Guss it's going to cost me what it is. Thanks for the suggestions.  As for lowing it I got a MBM disc brake kit with 2" lowered spindles from KMS Tools. I like the stance when they are lowered. Here are a couple of pics of my 56....................................jack

Interesting thread. We are in the process of restoring a 56 Pontiac (I will be on again asking what model when I get the numbers off of it) my son could not live without converting it over to air ride (so I live with it) but I know the steering box needs work (there is no more adjustment) and now would be the time to do it, the car is disassembled. I would like to put in a 605 as well but, the car had standard tranny and the linkage all ends right where I would have to cut some off the end of the steering shaft to fit the 605 in, so I'm thinking of just rebuilding the old box....any thoughts out there.....

I KNOW THE 605 WAS USED ON OLDS , CHEVELLES ETC.
IS THE 500 AN AFTER MARKET BOX OR WERE THEY USED BY G.M.??
