Help! Starter drive 1956 6-cylinder

Mine died, the local guy put in one that is the right length (Chevy drive is longer) but he did not check diameter and it is too big so it will not engage the flywheel (just grinds against it) -- problem is, the parts book lists 1956 Canadian Pontiac 6 but does not have a part number for the drive!

Chevy is SDN-8.

Does anyone have access to an old parts book that lists part number for Starter drive 1956 Canadian Pontiac 6-cylinder?

Please let me know. Thanks!

Dave

The guy said he put in a 56 Pontiac drive but I don't think he grasped that the "Pontiac" 6 was really a Chevy ... and looking in my parts book, I see that there were two different starters used on the 56 Canadian Pontiac 6-cyl. ... I will measure my old starter drive (that I rescued from his trash bin) and see if it matches this one. Thanks for the lead, Carl!

When I order any mechanical parts, I always ask for 66 Chevy   It confuses the 20 year olds on the counter, if I mention Cdn Pontiac....

Well this was an 80-year old but it still confused him smile.gif

However with measurements in hand, plus GM original part numbers I looked up in my parts manual (starter 1107652 which was stamped right on the case, and matching drive 1932188 from group 2.086) I was able to help him find the correct drive.

The reference you gave, Carl, was helpful in establishing correct measurements and what replacement drive would fit. Thanks!

After lunch I will install the starter and see if it really works.

Problem solved, starter works good, engine fired up, oil pressure 60 psi, generator charges well, tach and temp gauges work well, radiator leaks, oh s**t, time to go radiator shopping!
