Tunel ram vs dual plane

Hey guys, I've got the oportunity to pick up an edelbrock preformer dual plane intake with a holley 750 double pumper (a set up I know will work well with my 383 small block,) or a Wieand single carb tunnel ram with a 600 Holley.

Each seller is asking the same price.

I've always liked the idea of having a tunnel ram equiped motor, but I'm leary because of I've heard that they don't preform well at low RPM or for street driven applications.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

Thanks,

Is it an Performer RPM? If so they don't perform good down low either. In their catalog they say it's best with a steeper gear and loose converter to make up for that.

Well I had a Offy tunnel ram back in the late 70's on a 327. I ran both a single and a double carb set up. I had a standard set up so I didn't have to worry about brake iddling with a automatic. Ran OK . Reved like hell. Had very little manifold vacume so I took off the power brakes and ran standard brakes. When it got to cold the carbs would frost up . I took my wife to the Hospital when she was ready to give birth in it. Was the quickist ride she ever had LoL !!     Was in a 64 Malibu SS 327  4 spd with 12 bolt 456 gears.   Not sure how it would run with a automatic around town though, a standard is a little more for giving.

Foot note to this I did have a lot more CFM , used two 500 AFB's . And I have to agree with the rest of the guys . Other than the cool factor with the tunnel ram the dual plane 750 more practical for the street.

I agree. more cfm, dual feed. If it will work well with your mill, why would you want to starve your motor with a 600?(vacuum right?)  Just make sure that you have enough camshaft so it won't fall on it's face when you launch.biggrin

I agree. Just make sure the 750 Holley has a fresh kit as they get leaky on a hot day if I remember correctly. Just make sure you retorque the Edelbrock after a 15-20 hours to eliminate vacuum leaks.

No matter, I'm going to go with the performer/750 combo I'm pretty sure. Thanks for the advise everybody.

Both of those combo's are kinda off. The performer should have the 600 and the tunnel ram the 750 if its a double pumper.

I'd agree, there is a tendendancy to over carb for some reason. A 600 - 650 cfm would be ideal for that small block in my opinion. That size carb works very well with the performer intake. I am assuming this is a car to be street driven and not raced.

Click Here to get a carb CFM calculator. I put in your 383 sbc and it shows a 600 CFM is right.

Nice, thanks Ray. I've got the intake guy down to $120, the carb guy hasn't returned my call yet. If he won't bite, I'll just rebuild one of my Q-jets I guess.

65Camino had his Q-jet rebuilt by a fella in Toronto and it runs like a Champ, $300 to $400.

Personaly I like the Q jet over the Holley for the street. They run smother and better milage and you have 750 CFM available if your engine requires it.  Just my opinion.

Nothing like a well running Quadrajet , I agree with you 100%.

I thought the question was a choice of "A or B" not a multiple choice with "how about, or what if's." or this would work better. Isay go injected, runs better, no adjusting, better fuel economy,etc...

Same with me, I'd take the Q-Jet.

It was a question of a or b. I'd like nothing better than to stuff an injected LS2 into it, but it's a $ question I'm afraid. Carbs & intakes are cheap & simple to install, no computer, no extra wiring. I have 2 Q-jets, so I suppose using one of them with an alum intake is the most budget concious choice.
