'65-'70 AUTOMATIC TO MANUAL TRANS CONVERSION


i've had past inquires about parts and info, thought i'd post some info and pictures for those who have thoughts about yanking gears. wink
keep in mind, this is chevrolet, cdn pontiac.

starting with the pedals, '65-'70 pedals are basically the same.
'65-'68 pedals have the clutch pedal stop angled toward the brake pedal,
'69-'70 pedals the stop is opposite.

there is a slight difference in the '65-'68 pedal stops....

'65-'68 pedals are much easier to find, the stop could be modified to work in the '69-'70s.
also...the tab on the '69-'70 brake pedal is for the stop lamp switch, the '65-'68 stop switch contacts directly on the pedal.

the rest of the linkage are the same '65-'70....



pedal rod



cross shaft. this is a '69-'70 shaft, has an indent, for rev lockout rod? otherwise they are all the same.



65-70 fork rod pictured at top, bottom is a 68-72 nova/camaro rod which will work and is still available from GM.
i use the nova rod, i find it easier to adjust than the pedal rod under the hood.

the fork....is 65-70 b-body only. the curved chevelle/nova/camaro fork does not work in these cars.




i've come across this early '80s truck fork that may work. it's almost straight, about 1" shorter. if you move the fork rod to the inside of the cross shaft, it should work.

65-70 repro cross shaft frame bracket



this bracket is a '68-'72 nova/camaro bracket that i've heat/bent/cut to fit and drilled and bolted to the frame.



here are a couple views of the frame bracket placement.




bellhousing cross shaft stud mount. not sure if all b/housings have this mount, but you will need this.



view of the lower linkage. because of the rearward location of the cross shaft mount stud is why the curved fork does not work in the b-bodies.

This is awesome! I will be putting the original 4spd back in the 67 car and this is a really good example to follow.

Man this is a really great post!  Now... is it possible to see more of this "bolt-on" bracket please???  The bend in the frame on these cars makes it a bit tricky to decide how to fabricate something like this.  My original frame bracket has broken clean off, and with my HD pressure plate I would like to have something a bit more substantial and removable/adjustable would be a big plus...

A question for you Dave and rather than PM you I will ask here in case others run into this-

I just installed my 4 speed as you know, but I can`t even come close to getting the freeplay down to an acceptable level. With the pedal pushrod as long as it will go, I still have close to 3 inches of freeplay in the pedal

According to the Luk book, I have the right clutch assembly, 04-049 and I know from your pictures I have the correct fork. Vince pulled all this stuff out of the same car for me so I know I have the right linkage. Any ideas? It's as if I should have the long release bearing in there but everywhere I look says the short one is correct and that is the one that was in the kit.

it looks like a 409 manifold in clutch linkage photo if so could you give more details

I think he has a 454. I wonder if that is a Corvette 427 manifold?
