it stalled twice on me

so, after the canadian tire car show im on my way home and not even 5 min. after i started the car (it sat at the show for 2 or more hrs.) the car stalled out on me as i came up to a light. When i would turn the key and cranked it the "hot" light came on. I waited a bit and also put gas in it just in case and it started. Did this twice on the way home. Now, i dont think the transmision downshift is working right, at least it doesent sound like it or feel like it. Its a new thermostat(cant remember the temp rating) and gas is getting in the carb. New coil, wires, and cap. Still useing points. Any suggestions ??

I assume the hot light just came on as you were cranking or stalled. Normal for the idiot lights to come on at this point-that's how you determine they are working. The stalling could be anything- carb, spark etc. Hard to say what it is without being there when it happened. Sorry! Was cruise night busy? I almost went but figured there wouldn't be many there due to the cool weather.

Also, stalling while slowing down could be an indicator of wrong float level in the carb.

its just weird cause ive been driving the car with no problems for a week now. I'll look more into it tomorrow. The show was good. There wasent as many cars as normally cause of the cold im sure, but i had a great time and talked with alot of people. Was talking with unburt (white trans am) at the end of the show, really nice guy. I was even asked to go on a couple trips, one to hamilton with some other poncho owners(yes i told them about the site) and one to michigan with a guy who has a rat rod roadster. Thought why not until tonight!!LOL

did you set the air idle mixture when the engine warmed up ? If you set when its cold it will stahl out on you under load.

no i dident, i did them cold. That would make sense also because i find when im stopped at a light it seems to stutter every once in awhile, not at every light or stop, but now and again. Thanks for the tips guys, i will try them all tomorrow.

I had this happening when I ran a points distributor, turned out to be badly worn , replaced it with an HEI and never happened again.

I made this same mistake on my first carb job, I started the engine and set air idle mixture screws and ran great. When I went for a drive and the engine went to operating temp would stahl out at stop signs and lights. A carb guy tuned me in on this and I set when at operating temp and had no problem. Aperantly the bigest mistake on first time rebuilds.

how long should it be running for operating temp? Its just idiot lights so no gauge to tell me. I think a set of gauges are in my future as well as electronic ign.

I would assume about 15 minutes in this weather. Perhaps take it out for a drive first.

it started today, no problem, and i let it warm up and tried to set it all up, ran fine but i dident take it out for a spin (doing some landscaping so i was on the clock!!) Sooo, i then went back about 2-3 hrs. later and no go. Would turn but not fire up, just like yesterday. Had to push it back in the garage. Next paycheck i will go get the electronic ignition thingy, or, my dist. from my 79 305 should fit right?? I sat it in there to see it cleared the firewall when i had the manifold off and no problem.

I realy feel for you, some times these problems can drive you nuts.  SOunds like your going to have to check for spark, check the point gap, make sure the choke is open, things like that, Hope you get it started.

Can I suggest you check your battery and generator and starter connections?

i think i found the problem. The little power wire from the dist. to the one side of the coil needed a new end on it, it was loose i think so i soldered another one on and i have spark! Now, it fires up for half a second but wont stay running. Ive fiddled with so many things its all out of wack!!. Im off thursday so i will play with it then.

got it running again, what was happening is when i press the gas the idle cam would just flop around cause the choke was messed up again. Does anybody have a pic of a 2 barrel rochester carb from the side that shows the throttle side of the carb? im sure i put it back together right but ya never know. I cant find a clear pic on the net. i will take some pics tommorow of mine.

would the 70s era be the same as a 59? That would be great if you could, thx. I will go take a pic of mine in a bit. Now with the manual choke when i first start the car it should be open, and then after a couple minutes should it be slightly closed again? I think thats the problem im haveing, the choke in relation to the fast idle cam, i cant seem to get it set up correctly. Plus this is my first time fooling around with carbs, the last time with my trans am i would just have to adjust the idle a bit, but i had a friend who did the rest if need be (hes an hour away now)

if you don't drive it in winter, remove the choke alltogether, and get rid of the hassles. Ony thin is it makes it a little rough to cold start. (you will have to stay in the car and feather the gas till it warms up) It will aleviate alot of troubles.

thanks for the pics, mines a little different, the 2gc roch. i believe. i was thinking about that 87 player bird. To do this would i just take the thermostat thingy out thats it? I will try that in a bit. Thx for all the help guys, its just been one of those things, but at least its fixable without a diagnostic machine at $80 an hr. !!
