1956 261 cubic inch 6


well here is the deal Im planing to take out the engine for the next winter so i can rebuild it now the question is were i can buy parts for this motor or there are  parts compatible to this one, biggrin i going to start on my budget for this but i would like to  know how much i have to pay to rebuild it and were to get the parts for it. any sugestions are welcome biggrin

Ray's link is excellent, bottom line is that there is Good News and Bad News:

Good News is that most 235 c.i.d. Chevy parts fit perfect, and although this is an obsolete motor, there are still many places that have parts for it at a reasonable price (I just bought a remanufactured water pump for $40 + $5 core, and since I had the core, net price was $40), including your local auto parts guy (no need for internet or mail order hassles -- what if the damn thing don't fit or work???!!!) - and as a bonus, your local auto parts guy (unless he is a schlub) will be delighted to help out a guy like you with great old iron!

Bad News is that there is not 100% interchange between our 261's and the Chevy 235's - for example, my new water pump pulley did not line up with the crank pulley - OH $#IT! (some other specific differences between the 261 and the 235 are pointed out in Ray's link) - but, all problems can be resolved, and in this case, my friendly helpful local auto parts guy was willing to press the flange down on the shaft another 5/8" (in my situation) so the pulleys would line up.

And the Best News is, you've got friends here who will help when they can smile.gif

There is a source for 261-specific rebuild kits including the unique head gasket for the steam holes, I will try to find it and post it here.
