My son is having problems with his carburated 350 stalling in his 75 pickup. He's got an Edelbrock 650 on it and when I observed it idling for awhile the fuel line was letting bubbles into the filter and eventually the filter was down to being less than half full. It looks like the fuel pump has been recently replaced as the motor has only about 5000 clics on it since being rebuilt by the guy he bought it from. I was thinking it could be some kind of a vapor lock or something but am sort of at a loss what else it might be. We picked up a new fuel pump as they are cheap and will replace it if we don't hear of something different to check. It just dies when it's stopped at a light but the idle already is pretty high. What do you true mechanics think?
I had an old 350 did the same thing, long trips were hell. Poured cold water over the fuel pump and it would start right up and run for another 20mins. Changed the pump and ran fine till the camshaft wore out.
Being the fuel pump looks quite new I'm going to leave it on and I've rerouted the fuel line. They had the fuel line and the filter going right up and over on top of the motor where it would be the hottest so I put the fuel filter lower and away from the motor and the same with the fuel line so it just has to cut across to the carb rather than sitting over the motor like before. After I thought of doing this I ran it by a friend and he thought I was on track so we'll test it in the next little while.
It's often the gas cap. I have a kobber parts buisness, and we see that is usually the last thing anyone checks, but if it won't vent, you get vapor locks. Cheep to try.
Had the same thing sent carb out to SPECIALTY CARBURETORS INC. (was told it was full of rust.Check your tank he said ) sure enough new tank & sending unit

That's actually the first thing I checked and to me it looked like it was functioning like it should. If it does happen again though I will try a new one. Thanks.
I have had them that since the fuel tank was replaced, they replace the hose to the tank with one too long and it pinches it when the tank is installed! Also, the sock inside the tank will plug as well. Is the change over valve still in place? If so, bypass the valve with a hose, which I have also done, and also blow back through to clean out the sock in the tank. I had a late '80's 6.2 diesel that the sock was plugged in the tank! Everytime it would stall, I would remove the fuel line to the injection pump I would hear air rushing... But it was actually a vacuum I heard. Since I was on the road, I blew back as hard as I could and we got to where we were going.... Just some more options!!!!
Also, just dawned on me, have you tried bypassing the trucks fuel system by using a jerry can instead?? Run a hose fron the f/pump to the jerry can... If it works, from the pump to the carb will be ok and then you will have to start back tracking!!!
