Valve Covers

I am trying to locate a good pair of Pontiac script V-8 valve covers for a 1956 Canadian Pontiac. I am building a 1956 Pontiac Sedan Delivery and I live just outside Boston MA. I would appreciate any help.

That's a hard piece (s) to locate, far more 261 - 6's made. I hope I'm not stating the obvious for you but you know the small block 265 engines were painted green in 1956. We see so many restored cars engines painted Chevy orange but that didn't happen until 1958 on Canadian Pontiacs.

These scripted valve covers are really rare and hard to find. Are you using the original 265 heads from 1956 or newer heads.I will  look for some at the upcoming Barrie auto flea market next month but I have to have the info on your heads.

I wasn't sure about the engine color but in the course of my limited research, I guessed the correct color was the green, rather than the red that Chevrolet used in 56. Is the green a dificult color to match? Thanks.

I have newer style heads but adapters are available to mount the older style valve covers. I had a chance to buy a decent set a year ago but I balked at the asking price. In hindsight, well you know the rest! Thanks.

Are the adapters made for the staggered valve cover bolts and can you provide a link so I can check them out.

Thanks Al

I spoke to a gentleman with a 62 Parisienne at Auto Fest on the weekend and he had to have the paint mixed to get a good representation of the "green" colour. His was a 261 and he was fortunate to have some of the original colour on the block when it was degreased.

As Al will confirm the small block engine colour 55-57 is a tough animal to nail down. I have seen what I believe to be an original 55 and the colour was more greyish green not the bright dark green in the brochures. I have only seen one restored V8 in a 57 and the owner choose to go with the dark green seen on 261's below which by all accounts is probably correct for '57.

One thing for sure is that the Pontac script is painted black on the V8 valve covers. Below is the only photo I have of a small block V8 in green, a 57 Laurentian.

The adapters are in the Jeggs catalog, and are rather pricey, at $129.99 US. They are billet adapters to allow perimeter bolt style valve covers to be used on newer style, center bolt heads. They would probably have to be modified but to me it would be worth the effort.

LOL, how many sets do you have Slink, even have a nice sample of green paint left on them and it's not the dark green either.

You know, the color on those valve covers looks similar to the color they used on Detroit Diesel engines in the Sixties and Seventies.

This topic interests me. I have a later model 350 chevrolet engine in "Halfbreed" and was wondering if Pontiac Script or cast aluminum valve covers are available in the aftermarket in Canada for this application. I currently have cast aluminum no-name covers. Of course in the U.S. nothing is available.

It probably is the same colour. I haven't seen a set of those valve covers in long time. Does anyone know if they repop them?

GM Performance parts #10093393 Aluminum small block covers. You might be able to find some in stock. If I can find some I would put on my small block.

Well these look way cool and will fit, NOT the same as original but WTF the motor in question does not have original (staggered bolts) heads anyway, so ... I would do it .. maybe paint it near-original (never thought about it before, but I do think Detroit Diesel green [on my 6V53's in the owned-many-years-but-now-gone Hatteras] is a good match!!!) Lightly sand off paint on the "Pontiac" raised stamping and you are Rockin' An' Rollin" biggrin

I don't have anything to match the color to down here in the States. I checked with a friend of mine who is in the generator business and is a reliable source. The color is Detroit Diesel Alpine Green, and it should still be available. Good luck!

I havent really been following this topic to close.
But just so that everyone realizes, these will be staggared bolt early valve covers.
GM canada used the stagared ones until early 1962.
They were discontinued in 1957 on USA chevys.

Just thought i would point it out, because they will only fit on pre 62 283 heads.
