I knew of this one since '06. But, as uneducated as I was with these, I didn't know the importance or the rareity of it. I was in contact with him a while ago to get some snaps but he was busy with many other thing so when I finally got to go there, I made it a point to snap a few myself!!!
He knows of the site and hopefully he will become a member and chime in when he sees this post???? I asked if it was sale, most likely not as he has had it for years but and it is part of the family. One thing I forgot to get was the mileage but this engine was never apart to his knowledge.
Sorry Ken Y!!! I didn't want to let the cat out of the bag till I had the pics to back it up!! Nothing worst than telling people of a possibe "myth" and not having the proof to back it up!!! (lol)
On the topic of the last ones, I was told of, if I am correct, a '65 Rag with the same combo.. Also, remember a thread aways back where I was told in no uncertain terms that a '66 Biscayne was ordered with the 409 as well. I talked to the guy again and he says that his buddy wanted a 409 and got it!!! I still have to press him for more info!
There was a decal on the front of the breather but just the glue imprint is left. But this was the way he got it... (I am pretty sure that is what he said?)
A 409-cubic-inch (6.7 L) version was Chevrolet's top regular production engine from 1961 to 1965, with a choice of single- or dual-four-barrel carburetors. Bore and stroke were both up from the 348 at 4.312 in (109.5 mm) by 3.50 in (89 mm). On December 17, 1960, the 409 engine was announced along with the Impala SS (Super Sport) model. The initial version of the engine produced 360 hp (270 kW), with a single-four-barrel Carter AFB carburetor. The same engine was upped to 380 hp (280 kW) in 1962. A 409 horsepower (305 kW) version of this engine was also available, developing 1 hp per cubic inch with a dual-four-barrel aluminum intake manifold and two Carter AFB carburetors. In the 1963 model year, output reached 425 hp (317 kW) at 6200 rpm with the 2X4 setup, 11.25:1 compression and a solid lifter camshaft. This engine was immortalized in the Beach Boys song titled "409". The engine was available through mid 1965 when it was replaced by the 396-cubic-inch 425 hp (317 kW) Mark IV big-block engine. In addition, a 340 hp (250 kW) version of the 409 engine was available from 19631965, with a single-four-barrel cast-iron intake mounting a Rochester 4GC carburetor, and a hydraulic-lifter camshaft.
I know Ray.... But, from what we have seen here lately, you never know!!! Maybe the dealer swapped for a 409???
I will try to sit him down and get as much info as I can from him and maybe his chum is still above ground and we can talk to him... Maybe he has pics, paper work etc.......
And I found this interesting on the Beach Boys song 409!!!
"409"
The engine noises heard at the beginning of the song were of Usher's Chevrolet 348, the W-series predecessor to the 409.

to ad to the..' the dealership did weird things' I just missed on a 61 Parisienne bubble top about 10 years ago out of Medice Hat. The car was a fairly low mile car with a 409 ,,,yep but we all know that it didn't come that way. Seems the 348 had a mishap, and the 409 was installed at the dealership as a service replacement because the 348 was no longer availeable, As I type this , I just realized I know where the car ended, up , unfortunatly , when I say I missed,,the 409 and car where parted when I entered the scene. the 409 ??? who knows? the car ,10 miles from my house.
So....long winded,,and a little dense,,I forgot all about the car and combo...IF it where a true 348 bubble top ,,HOW RARE WOULD THAT BE????????????
HOW would one verify that it was a 348 car??

I "think" GM Vintage can tell you engine on a 61, or am I wrong?

I agree ,. it's worth the 20K. But at that price ,.. it would have to be the right buyer. One with very deep pockets. We all know that a resto ,.. even as good as what we see in the pictures .,,will still run $20,000+. So then you're in it at $45,000+. Has anyone been watching Barrett Jackson auctions lately? You can almost take your pick,.. turn key,.. frame off restored classic vehicles for $30-$40K. And you drive it away!
We hi-jack threads with alarming frequency here! Your Chryslers sound neat, especially the 300H, although I can relate to you having taken it apart and now having it in a million pieces around the garage. I have one of those "retirement" projects as well, as that is only time when I might even have enough time to think about completing it!
I can see now why you would like to get something that you can drive now. What is price of fuel in Switzerland these days? I think a 6 banger with 3 on the tree will be your most logical choice. Just curious, what do you have for a daily driver?

HI,Guys.I guess old 67poncho let the cat out of the bag posting pics of my 09.I told him that was ok.Never realized there was a site for Canadian pontiacs. As far as the car goes I think I am the third owner. It had a paint job (somewhat less than perfect)years ago.Lt fender was replaced with a used one at that time.Everything else I believe is original.
I've said it before, but when I was 8 or so my uncle (my Caddy uncle) bought my older cousin a 65 Custom Sport, Red with white guts 283. I loved that car then and love them now. I still have the owners manual somehow from that car, and I would just gaze at the engine page where all the specs are and wonder what it would have been like to have the 409 with "special camshaft" in that car.
The old girl usually gets out once or twice a year.Went 100 or so miles last year but only got a quick run this year.To many projects to little time.its the kind of car that can get a guy in trouble even at my age.It doesn,t like to go slow!
