Changes to 48 pontiac

Hi, Just started to rebuild a 1948 pont torpedo back. Does anyone have any suggestions on replacing rear end housing, front end, and steering colume? Is there anything that is a good match to this frame? Also it has the old type master cylinder on the frame is there a better fire wall mount system? The car is original when it comes to these components but is powered by a 455 olds engine,I am thinking of going to a small block 350 and then would consider making changes to the drive train brakes, and steering.Any help would be appreciated, I am new to this site and would welcome your opinions. Thanks.confuse

Welcome Tom, sounds like a neat project.  Have a look at Heinzman street rod site. Looks like they have some neat looking suspension upgrades. They have a bolt in crossmember for the mustang II steering and they have a brake bracket for a latter style master cylinder.  Just click on 41-48 chevy.  Does not hurt to have a look for ideas.

How far do you want to go? If its high end stuff then for me its an Art Morrison chassis. But if you want to go with a bolt in Mustang II Heidts has a good one. Back end I've heard that a late 60's camaro rear end works fine I beilive its the same bolt patern 5 on 4 3/4. For me its a Moser rear end with a four bar setup. As for brakes the same also goes. You can swap out most of the parts, but some fab work will be needed to rework the brake pedal and assortied parts that go with it. IF your wanting power steering, just use the correct Gm pump for the 350 your going to bolt in. Plumb this to the Mustang II rack that will be provided with your kit from Heidts.                     I like "Ididit"steering columns, they have some nice tilt ones I like. Man this is starting to sound like a wish list of mine..
