68SD, Only US Super Sport 396 Chevelles were 138 cars starting in 66. GM Canada never had the super sport 396 package in 66, the Canadian 66 cars were 136 cars with the Malibu SS option and you could add a 396 only with the flat hood and Malibu SS emblems on the quarters and Malibu on the dash

I guess I am asking not telling. I am not sure. I check out a 738 SS Chevelle for a friend and pop the trunk only to see the build tag on the seat. It has all the same options including the colors as the cowl tag but has the 736 suffix on it instead of the 738. The cowl tag and the vin both are 738. Even if the seat isn't from this car it matches the option list except it is a 736. This is a Kansas car. Weird eh?

Of course, I had no brain when I replied above. They never had a Malibu SS after 1965 did they... Only big block SS 396 cars or plain Malibu.

Carl are all early American Chevelles born as 736 cars with a 738 on the tag to denote SS also. I just came across this the other day. A build sheet with 736 and 738 on the cowl tag and vin. Sorry if this is off topic but it's sort of related.

Really....  Man, what next. I don't think I remember ever hearing or seeing that. US only you say.

George is a good man. Make sure you keep us posted. Nice car!!!

PS  I think that square side mirror might be off a '67?

Hi Geoff.    Got my info back from George at GM. Thanks again for his name. He was fast. Though he now wants $73.45 for this service now. See attatched photo. It's states it's a Beaumont Custom Convertible.  They call it that on one line but then call it Sport Deluxe on another line. Is it not a true Sport Deluxe ? I'm confused here.

FYI  -  The update on the chrome trim set for the '66 SD from Taylor at DT Stainless

The new prices from DT Stainless for the complete '66 sport Deluxe chrome set is now $2995 plus $100 shipping plus $100 for the fasteners if needed.

Prices were $2200 in Dec. 09. Prices up everywhere it seems. Can't get a break these days.  furious

I picked up one from NPD a little while back. Almost identical to my old "sagging" mirror. Just be mindful that some of the reproductions have the Chevy bowtie on them which is not what you want. (Personally, I think square mirrors look better on these square cars. Just not factory correct.) Let us know how you make out with your GM info!

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'll phone George Zapora tomorrow and try and get the full scoop. I'll keep you posted.

I know the drivers mirror's not correct.....but back in the day, when I was a teenager and still knew everything, I thought bigger was better and changed it. I'll have to dig around, but I have the feeling it got chucked. no

Welcome, Peter! Headrests are a legit option in 1966 and are rare. Your 66 appears to be Royal Mist (dark blue) with Bright Blue interior (a Sport Deluxe & also Custom convertible colour).

A classmates mother used to own a 283-powered 66 Chevelle 300 convertible in the same colours as your car except for the milder medium blue interior. The car was traded in on a new 1973 Pontiac Ventura.

Normally I am not a huge Cragar SS fan, but they work very nicely on certain cars (1960-early 70s Mopars, 1966 Beaumonts...)

Thanks for your help 03cts sport. I think I will contact GM for thier info. I'm really impressed by this site. It appears that it took me a long time to fall off the Turnup truck to discover it. Got to get out of the garage more often.

Headrests in '66 were an option I believe, but very uncommon. You might find the following brochure link of interest:

 http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/t20435871/beaumont-production-numbers/forum.spark?forumID=118110&p=3&topicID=20101828

Fender flags were a Chevy thing that some owners added afterwards.  Your V8 emblems are correct.  Bumper guards were an option.  (And I believe that the placement of the radio antenae's were at the mercy of the dealers?)

Whether or not your car came with the headrests and bumper guards, should be answered by the GM documentation which is available for something like $50.00.

Nice restoration work!

Wow...that is nice !

I don't understand some of the differences though...his front fender flags emblem vs the V8 emblem on mine. Also the front bumper push bars vs. non push bars. Were these option differences ? Also, My '66 is the only one I've seen with head-rests. My aunt bought the car when it was 1 year old, and I bought it off her about 10 years later. I'm thinking the 1st original owner must of added these on in '67 when I think they became available. Does anybody else have them ?

Just joined on this website. Didn't even know about this site. My ride's not near as nice as yours but I'm still working toward finishing the metal work. My first 2 pics are from before I started. Though the pics don't show it the frame and body was full of rust. The update is...I've put in a new frame which I was lucky to find. Then replaced the rusty floor, floor braces, complete trunk, rear wheel wells, door skins, fender patch panels, left quarter panel and now working on the last right quarter panel. (the light at the end of the tunnel it seems).
Also realize this thread's a year old. confuse.gif

sweet car ! Always loved cragars too
