I have radials on my 54 laurentian and it drives pretty decent, remember it is 50's technology at its finest.I don't think people used to race around at 130kmh all the time like they do now. That being said I followed the wife home one day as she was driving her Tahoe and me not really knowing how accurate my speedo was I just kept up to her. When we pulled in the driveway she got out chuckling and said you realize I was doing 130kmh on the highway just to see if that old car could keep up.I also replaced the kingpins and the long tie rod on the rebuild, but just with stock parts.I am just going thru buying new tires for my 49 Pontiac which has the g78-15'son it,they will be replaced with a set of 205/75/15 radial whitewalls from coker tire, about 245.00 each.
There is no denying that wide white wall radials are the only way to go on our 1950's and 1960's vintage cars. I doubt that there are radial sizes that would fit earlier vintage cars of the 1940's but i am not sure about that. I would not take a free set of new bias ply tires over superb radials. I had a set on my 57 Chev and have a set on my present 57 Pontiac and there is no turning back ever. My 74 Chev Caprice Estate wagon had bias ply since new because that is how my dad bought the car new. When i took over the 74 wagon after my dads passing, the first thing was to get rid of those bias ply. I found the 74 wagon a real hazard on the highway with the bias ply, the car would slightly swing from side to side at the back. Once i put a set of high end Michelin radials on her, not only was the sway gone but the ride was better by 100%. Radials rule and personally i would only buy the best MICHELIN for a regular every day car. Cheers. George.

Holy $1200.00 for white walls I guess I'm too cheap for that....

Look at it in another way .... it cost aproximatly the same to buy a nice set of whitewalls than Mag Wheels plus tires ! Just depands on the look you're going for .
Even new ""normal"" tires will get you in the 500$ range !
I agree with MickyG. Got the original rims for our 56 powder coated and will be purchasing WW and it came to basicly the same price as the mags and the BF Goodriches on one of our other vehicles.
