Rare Canadian car, but not a Pontiac...

I recently had an incredibly rare Canadian car fall into my lap that was part of an impressive estate locally, I was definately not in the market for one, but I knew I would regret passing it up even if that meant I am very broke now... good thing I can survive on cans of tuna and K-rations for long periods! lol (this was part of a package deal that included a 56 Meteor Niagra wagon ~for parts~, 66 Mercury truck, 59 Meteor Rideau 500 2 door hard-top ~for parts~, 2002 Pontiac Bonneville ~for parts~, 56 Mercury COE)

Now I hope you guys don't mind me posting this here being as it's not a Pontiac, but I am quite excited by this car, and it is Canadian...

My "new" 1961 Monarch Richelieu 4 door hard-top!

From my research I have found that of the roughly 3200 1961 Monarchs built (the final year for the true Canadian Monarch) there was only 497 of the 4 door hard-top built, all I need to figure out is how many are still left, looking online I found 2 others, and several 4 door sedans and a few 2 door hard-tops.

The car has a good running gold block 390 FE, 4 BBL, automatic, 9 inch rear, almost no rust, a perfect windshield and runs and drives great... though it does'nt stop yet as I need a master cylinder and cannot seem to get one (the old Ford fruit jar style)

So far all I am missing for the car is the rear view mirror and one headlight ring, I found the full set of hubcaps in the trunk!

Nice find!  I'm sure it will be a stong runner once you can get it to stop!

One thing I didn't make a connection until now... the Monarch's crown looks alot like the one in the Hallmark logo!

I figured you guys would be cool with it, but being still a newbie and all I was not totally sure...

I made the Hallmark connection, but i was'nt going to say anything.. LOL

Those crowns by all rights should be punched aluminum, but they are solid and about a half inch thick!

I sure do not mind you posting those pics. The 56 wagon would be a neet car also.

In my neigborhood back in the 1960s (Ancaster Heights) there was a 1961 Monarch Richelieu 4 door sedan in pale gold (fawn). At the time I did not know what kind of car it was. I remember the crown in the grille. I haven't seen another in many decades.

While the Meteor was more or less a Ford/Mercury hybrid sold through Canadian Mercury dealers, the Monarch was a Mercury sold through Canadian Ford dealerships. The Monarch name returned for 1975 as a Mercury Monarch, sibling to the Ford Granada.

So it sounds like you bought a fleet. I sure hope your have the room for it. That COE sounds cool as does the Meteor Niagara wagon.

That's a really cool find!!  I love all the Canadian specials... though the Pontiacs are my favourites, they're all very unique and cool!

Kind of a coincidence, but I saw one at a cruise night this past August and took a few pics of it as it was getting dark out, so the pics didn't come out as well as I'd liked.  This is the first one I ever remember seeing close up in my adult life, so I was really surprised when I read your post.

Thanks for posting! smile

That is very cool, this one is a 4 door sedan, mine is a 4 door hard-top (I love 4 door hard-tops) I wish they had made a wagon version because that would have been wild!

That looks great in blue and white, mine was originally white, and I have no plans to put it back to white, the black loos so much better to me!

Sedan or HT, the '61 Monarch is rare!

Here's an ad I found elsewhere on the net:

Should I post those here or in new topic threads? (not totally sure how this sites members prefer that sort of thing yet)

Excellent find. Looks like a model that could have been a  cop car.
