327/l79 cam

have a 327 with a l79 cam/flat tops/882/eddy brock intake...and a quad for now.

block is punched 30 over///and i want to run it in a 66 impala...i tried getting an answer at

another site and everyone said drop a 350 or a 383 in?

i figured it will have 9 to 1 cr and 3.xx gears..not high,not a posi.

i just want to cruze, will a stock p/g be ok...or will i need a 2500 stall?

if i don't like the p/g i was going for the 700r4 maybe or a 4 speed...but thats way off for know/

what do you guys think...i was reading that i can get it to idle at 6-665...

just don't want to be in and out of drive at the lights

also going to run 225/70r15 rallies or the stock steelies..14"

I have experience with a very similar setup. Back to you later tonight. In the meantime, I'm sure you will get other help here as there's other guys who have used the L79 cam here.

For just cruising, the engine specs out great. The tire size works out quite well. The only thing I would seriously consider is changing to a shortshaft TH-350 trans. Less stress on the driveline, plus it really wakes up the car.

the 700r4 will really make the car fun to drive (a really low 1st gear)

Back in the early 70's I had a L76 365 HP 327 that I detuned with the L79 cam and put in my 68 chevelle with a glide and 3.08 gears. It idled fine. This combo was slugish of the line but after you got going would just scream. I ran this combo on a trip to Kingston and back to winnipeg and had no problems the whole trip. I latter changed to a four speed and that realy woke up that little motor. Made that car a whole lot more fun to drive.

The stock flat tops and 462 or 461 double hump heads (64cc) should squeeze
( I think) 10:1 and the L79 cam rpm range around 5800. A real nice street cam!

I find many forums are younger guys who have no sense of nostalgia and just think bigger is the only way to go. Ignore them it you want to run a 327, they're lots of fun!

i figured it will have 9 to 1 cr and 3.xx gears..not high,not a posi.

Depending on the exact piston, you are likely in the low 9's range.

i just want to cruze, will a stock p/g be ok...or will i need a 2500 stall?

An L79 cam will work fine with a stock converter and powerglide. However, you will likely find it can barely spin the tires from a dead stop. As stated, the L79 cam makes great power once you get close to 2500 RPM.

if i don't like the p/g i was going for the 700r4 maybe or a 4 speed...but thats way off for know/

As mentioned, if you are just cruising, leave it a glide and enjoy!

You should have no trouble getting it to idle around 700 RPM which is just fine.

just don't want to be in and out of drive at the lights

I have almost the exact engine combo in my 65 Impala, although a 350 not 327. Runs fine no issues. Idles well, plenty of vacuum for the power brakes, and that nice L79 lope. I run a TH350, behind mine, a PG will be a bit of a dog off the line, the 700R4 will be the best of all worlds, hopefully my next upgrade.
Drop it in, drive it, and have fun.

That L79 lope was great, seamed to hear it more behind a auto trans at a stop light than a standard.

I also have basicly the same combo in my 68 2+2.  327 powerglide and 3.07 gears. Sometimes I have to two foot it at the lights but that's halve the fun of it. She is a bit slugglish off the line but once you're going it's "See Ya!" to all those rice burnin' Junkers
with the 5gallon pail exhaust pipes.

It depends if you want a period correct ride or cheap horsepower? The 383 will kill a 327 for the dollars invested. They run hot but go like stink. If you own the other motor I would drop it in and go. Drop in the TH 350 because they are cheap and will make your car more fun to drive around in. The PG are dogs but they last forever.

65sssd You are right about the powerglide lasting forever. I was tripping over
a TH350 in my garage for years thinking that old PG would give up the ghost.
I finally got rid of the TH350. That PG is like the eveready bunny - Keeps going
and going and going.
