1968 power brake upgrade


I just bought a 68 beaumont with factory front disc/rear drums. I am looking to upgrade them to power brakes. I have ordered the stock booster/master combo but what is required other than a new proportioning valve is there anything else I am missing? Does the brake pedal set up need to be changed at all? I am assuming i need a longer rod as well?

 

Thanks guys....next is to tackle the steering!

I believe a longer rod, as you mentioned, brake pedal should have 2 holes in it for the pin. No need to change the proportioning valve, all's that does is set up your brake bias. If it already has factory discs, it has the correct one.

I have manual disks. They are no different except for ease to push the pedal. You still have to change the master cylinder and prop. valve. Only thing different is moving the pedal pushrod "position" and putting a booster on. Your call.

Yes, sorry, you have to change to master cyl. As well. I still dont agree that you have to change the prop valve .

I wanna put a booster on mine as well.. but im 4 wheel drum. so ill be following this !

im wondering about the prop valve also,i always thought one for drums and one for discs didnt think power/non power was an issue any input guys?

Power or non power is not an issue if you already have discs in the front. I found my proportioning valve down bolted to the frame. I will be changing out the master cylinder, adding a booster and relocating the pushrod to the second hole in the pedal. I will see if I have to bend new lines from the MC to the Proportioning valve. I will know once I get the new stuff bolted up. Anyone know where I should pull vaccuum from? Currently my PCV valve is connected to the vaccuum off of the back of the carb. Do I need a backing plate to add the booster?

Well the parts are finally here.....Hoping to install this weekend. I am hoping to pull vaccuum from the NOS port on the Edelbrock Air gap intake. My only concern is whether or not I will be able to draw the 16 pounds of vaccuum required with my current cam set up. If not, I will need to add an electric vaccuum booster. Fingers crossed!

Everything is in and working well. Pulled vacuum off of the intake. Had to bleed the brakes a few times but everything works and looks great.

did you install a check valve on the vacuum line?  you might need to , or you'll only get one good hit on the brakes ...I've had em where it even kills the engine when it robs all the vacuum,,but that was a 6 cyl.
