CALGARY- A spring storm made for slick conditions on some Alberta highways on Friday, proving problematic for those leaving town for the long weekend.
A number of semis were reported to be in the ditch just north of Red Deer, along with dozens of crashes. That caused the southbound lanes of Highway 2 to grind to a halt.
Ponoka RCMP say the roadway has come to a complete stop in the southbound lanes just south of Lacombe. The northbound lanes are slow moving. They warn that the highway is very icy, and travel is not recommended.
AMA road reports show roads are partially covered with snow between Innisfail and Lacombe, which includes the Blackfalds and Red Deer areas.

That guy with a bicycle on the back of his car is definitely heading out of Alberta if he is thinking of wanting to ride it!
I think it was the mayor going to downtown Calgary for a spin around the block.....
The mayor and council in Calgary think this is San Francisco (where year round cycling in snowless weather is the norm)
Somebody didn't tell them this is a Canadian city where it snows and gets really, really cold....at least half of the year.
They also think cycling is the answer to commuting downtown (Calgary is spread out further than the city of New York)
So they are spending tax dollars to promote cycling...year round mind you, in Calgary. Most people can count the number of cyclist using bikes at -30c or snow laden days on their fingers.
__________
"On Wednesday, a council committee will debate a proposal by the citys transportation department to introduce five dedicated cycling tracks for a one-year trial starting in the summer of 2015. The pilot project will cost about $9.3 million, plus an additional $5.2 million if the project is deemed a success and the cycling infrastructure is made permanent.
City officials say right now, 2.5 per cent of daily downtown transportation is done on bicycle, and they want to see that increase to four per cent. The city estimates that over the next two decades, 40,000 additional people will have jobs downtown, and without the ability to build new roads in the core there are real concerns about how Calgary will handle the impending commuter crunch.
You simply cant stuff more cars downtown. This a $9 million investment on a network that will really open up a whole other mode of access, said Ward 9 Coun. Gian-Carlo Carra.
I think its an important and necessary thing in the evolution of our city.
