Sorry, I have a 6 cylinder 51 chieftain. Is there a way to check this by pulling off the fuel feed line to my carb and trying to start the car and seeing if fuel comes out.

if its a 239 flathead, looking at the front of the engine on the left side just above the oil pan should be the fuel pump cannot locate my manual, to see if it gives a type but believe is ac delco, could be the diaphragm is gone, but rebuild kits should be availavable
Yes you can disconnect at the carb to see if you are getting fuel if not it is not a big job to pull the fuel pump then you can check the pressure on the inlet and outlet by activating the arm by hand the arm runs on your cam not sure of the psi, the fuel pump is about a foot or foot and ahalf in front of the carb and straight down on the lower edge of the engine block.
Eliminate the coil possibility by trying another coil ....I remember that stupid issue with one of my carsSo simple to hook-up and try.....we didn't think it was that and wasted time on more complicated issues//...and in the end it was the coil.
your engine run ok over the idle speed? If yes, look at the sleeve under the carburator, yes, in the intake, the sleeve can pitted by the exhaust gas. The exhaust gas, when the heat riser valve work properly, flow around the «sleeve» to heat up the intake in the engine heat up period. I've seen some Pontiac one barrel carb intake with small hole from the corrosive exhasut. If I'm correct, remove the sleeve, ask a machinist to make you a new one, heat your intake after, freeze the new sleeve, drop the cold sleeve in the hot intake ET VOILĄ!
