Discs were optional in 1968.

Yup, disk brakes were not standard on the SD-396 until 1969, just like the Chevelle (& Nova / Acadian SS, Camaro SS & COPO 427 cars, Impala SS427). Curiously a non-SS Big Chevy with a 427 didn't get disks as standard, probably because of the large 11" drums. A Pontiac 2+2 with a 427 didn't get disk brakes as standard either. The 1970 2+2 got disk brakes & Rally Wheels as standard, right down to the base 350.

both my high optioned 1967 427 Caprice & 427 Impala have drum brakes on the front. Guessing there had to be a lot of people think what do I need that for or I will stick with dependable drum brakes

I believe the last time I ordered front brake shoes for my 68 SD the parts guy told me that the BB cars front shoes were wider than the rest, not 100% sure if this is true or not ??

Not true from what I've seen on cars or in parts books. They are all the same.
