Dads 66 gmc pickup

Been looking for a project for my dad for while now, found him a 1 owner 66 gmc custom. The old guy bought it brand new in uranium city sask, while working in the uranium mines. The city is in the far north west side of the province, 30 miles from the northwest territory's boarder. It was driven up mine supply roads and brought across lake athabasca on a barge to U city. The truck stayed in the north until 1981 when he drove it out on the winter roads across the lake. over 5000 people lived in uranium city, The closure of the mines was the towns demise, now about 200 people live there. It was a pretty interesting story. The truck was ordered with a 292 and 3 on the column. 4:11 posi. It has 90 000 miles. My dad wants to dress it up with chrome bumpers and some nice wheels, add power steering and make it a nice reliable driver. The doors open and close like a new truck.

has anyone ever done a power steering conversion to a 66?

Does anyone have power steering pump brackets for a 292 i6.    Thanks...Kyle

Cool story Kyle, good friend of mine was born and raised in U.C. , pretty interesting stuff. It was a flag ship town in its day!

Very nice project!..indeed.

Not sure if the brackets bolt up? I have a 66 Beaumont 6 cyl. Here with all the power steering stuff on it? Do some research, or someone will chime in and let us know..lol!

I don't have any brackets, but did one for my Dad around 1980. A 1973 & newer 1/2T box fit nicely, but you probably already know that. I had to notch a bumper bracket for a factory finish, and maybe drill one hole.

Thanks
Randy

What size wheels are on the truck  16"with a split rim or a 15 " regular rim?

16" 6 bolts. Honestly have not looked at the rims much, would they be split rims?

I think so. I had my father in laws old farm truck here for years. Absolutely 100% identical to the truck pictured except it was a 4 speed, and it had split rims.

Luv those trucks, learnt to drive in the same truck ( hay feilds ) but was a stepside. I'm sure you dad will have alot of fun tinkering with his new toy.

If you want to keep the truck original it should have the split rims with six hole pattern. I found a set of steel 15" six hole rims for my 66 pickup. You could also get a set of six hole rallye wheel style from a 80's suburban a much wider rim that will make the truck ride a lot better. There are a lot of options for modernizing the brakes and power steering for that era of truck.  A very nice piece to start with. I would suggest going to Jim Carters online store for a lot of excellent tips on restoring or modifing these trucks.
