Difference Between Small Block And Big Block Engine Frame Mounts?

Well, I am lost in this discussion..... Is there any affirmative way of knowing with the engine pulled and besides the 2-line fuel lines, data tag etc, whether or not it is a Mouse or Rat?

Knowing your preference in years, I am guessing 67, or maybe 68?

So we have no other clues to go on, right? No tag, no brackets or pulleys, no throttle linkage pieces, radiator, ps hoses, nothing?

If there are no other clues, I would say no except for the VIN and GM Vintage. You likely have looked in the parts book and seen there is no big block exclusive frame stands for 65 through 68. They mix and match it seems according to the listing. It just keeps saying "Note A", which is either approx 3" tall or approx 2 1/2" tall.

I am glad you bit to reply to this topic as well as others I too am hoping... Lets just say, '65-'70... We seem to have it figured to a "short" mount to be a BB and the "taller" one to being a SB........ as a general conclusion....

There is no such thing as a BB motor mount (67 for sure). There were two different styles height wise that were shared by both bb and sb. This has been discussed many times over on other sites.

So much of my experience with this was just to strip the big block out of parts cars and not pay close attention to which car had what. I wish I would have been more observant (and experienced). We always just matched the mount to the frame stand (after my first experience with my 283 to 427 conversion where I didn't know better and I jumped up and down on top of the Rat trying to get it to sit down on the mounts)! True story.

We finally figured it out that the mounts where different, bolted 283 mounts to the 427, and Bob's your uncle.

That's what I did with my big block swap, I took the ears off the 350 and bolted them to the 454, never touched the frame mounts and the rat just clicked onto the mounts and we slid in the bolts. Easy Peaze as 427Carl says.

My experience mentioned above was putting a 68 Impala 427 into a Grande Parisienne that was originally a 283, both cars being very original, so I am pretty sure there is (at least sometimes) a difference between 66 and 68.

This is where I became confused, not that that is daunting feat!! (lol) The tall mount is on a '65 Safari, presumably a SB.... The short mount is on a '69 Impala that I would have taken for a BB... BUT, it is an L48 350 car.... What is confusing to me is that the reminants of the engine mount is the same as the one in my '70 Estate with the LS4 454... I just found it odd... I am not sure you can buy the same tall rubber mounts as all I have seen are the generic "skinnier" SB ones.....

I have also noticed that the lower frame mounts are slotted....

NOW, that being said, I got my new mounts today from another supplier and proceeded to inspect and found that they are the proper lookin', more robust and thicker padding than the Napa ones I had already....

So I went to my '65 Safari to compare how they fit over the frame mount and to my dismay, they were too narrow to fit over the tower.....disbelief So, I took hammer in hand and widened them and even still, they are dismal to say the least... (insert swearing and condeming off shore parts here) Not happy, or?

Then a flash went off in my head... I took the other non hammered mount and went to the 2+2, the '69 Impala and low and behold, they fit together like Mom and Dad!!! To be sure, I went to the Grande Safari and they will not fit over the frame tower...

Did anyone else know that these 2 sets of frame mounts were DIFFERENT widths as well.... I didn't and I learned something new again today!
