Whole thing is sickening, especially when you think that these guys were known to authorities but nothing could be done to them.

Hopefully the rules will change and future suspects will be dealt with accordingly.

Maybe they need to start watching potential terrorists as closely has they watch pedophiles.  They already have a system in place for that.  Maybe we should now be arresting people for having contact with known terrorist organizations - then put 'em all on a barge in the middle of an ocean and give our navy an opportunity for target practice....

I know, it sounds a little extreme - I'm just tired of hearing of this pond scum living in our country taking advantage of all it has to offer, and then turning on its citizens.  furious

We need to get tougher on those who hate us for no reason other than we don't have the same (warped) belief system as theirs...

 AMEN to that too.

 Pedophiles aren't being watched either....The general public is not allowed to know if one is living next door.

Both cases of murder this past week were committed by Canadians, real Canadians shall we say, born and raised here by Canadians. These people became radicalized and disenfranchised with Canada, they are not part of some grand Jihad, they acted alone. Just wanted to clear that up. Our security forces are really good at shutting down the organized plans for attack, next to impossible to find a wack job with a gun running around among 30,000,000 of us.

 All agreed but that does not change the seriousness of the deep hatred towards western culture, by people that are so inclined. Those that are responsible for 911 in the U.S were mostly American born and educated but that did not change the deep rooted hatred that these groups have towards those that are not part of their so called "faith" and culture. I think most people have enough sense to know that we can never be totally safe and protected by the "wack jobs" of the world. That any one of us can be a target at any time but what happened recently is something most Canadians never thought could happen. I am just amazed it has never happened much earlier. Are we now to live in fear, of course not but the fear now is real.

I feel privileged to live in Canada and it's not a couple of sickos who are going to make me change my habits, the only thing I'll do differently this year is wear the poppies early to remember and honor the two soldiers cowardly assassinated this week... This is the best country in the world bar none . My 2 cents...

Here's a paraphrase of my pre-game talk to my team of highly talented  16 year old hockey players:

As a team we know we have 4 pillars that we hold high and strive to play the game by, Pride, Respect, Discipline and Support . Just like our team our country is founded on deep rooted pillars and yesterday we know that these pillars were attacked, two of our most sacred pillars, the War Memorial and our Parliament. I am proud today more than I have ever been to be Canadian, we live in a place where people we don't even know and don't even know us are willing to give their lives so we can go about our business free from fear, we can play this great game of hockey we all so love without a care in the world. Yesterday one of those people died for us and one of those people answered the call, God Bless Corporal Cirillo and God Bless Sgt-at-Arms Vickers, we are indebted to these men who keep us safe and keep our country glorious and free. Lets not squander what they have done for us, tonight we play with Pride and Respect for Canada and our team.

It was a little quiet then the Captain got up, gave me props and embrace followed by the two Alternates and then the rest of the boys filed by onto the ice.  Funny little side bar, my back-up goalie looked at me and asked "Did you wing that Coach" and I had to admit that I had.

 Ray, I understand your points for sure.  My thoughts:

- Yes, they may have been born and raised here, but to my way of thinking they are not 'real Canadians'.  To be a real Canadian involves more than just being born here - you have to embrace all that makes Canada a great country, you have to love and respect what your country stands for.  These people obviously do not - they are not 'real Canadians'.

- I will not pretend to have access to any intel which might tell me whether or not they are oficially part of some jihad or not.  I haven't even read all that is out there on the media on them (nor do I want to as I feel giving them any kind of notoriety somehow validates their existence to those who might support them).  I will say, that with the internet and social media outlets that are contained within it, there are so many ways that these 'wack jobs' can become part of a larger movement.  IMHO, whether acting on their own or directed by others, the fact that they have adopted the views of these extremists and have become "radicalized" (not a fan of that term which has become popular in the media of late), does in fact make them part of a grand jihad.  Remember, the aim of the group of whack jobs who will hate all non-"radicalized" citizens of countries who dare to stand up to their primitive beliefs is to enlist as many people as they can to act against said countries.  In these cases, unfortunately, they were successful.

- Up to now, our security forces have become really good at shutting down larger organized plans for attack, but IMHO their next job will be to pick out these "radicalized" whack jobs who appear to be the latest incarnation of terrorism.  It appears that they did in fact know about both of these people, but failed to act for whatever reason (again, I am not 'in the know' so I won't pretend to know the intricacies of why or why not).  This type of activity is constantly evolving, and our security forces and government in general have to evolve with them - it's an everchanging landscape, unfortunately.

I wish it were so simple to say that they are random acts by whack jobs, but I'm not sure it would be prudent to find comfort in those thoughts.

We have to accept the fact that, some people just can not help being who they are. The deep hatred towards western culture and any cultures other than their own, is deep in their core and right from birth. We can be tolerant, understanding, even forgiving and what does that get us. Just more of the same hate. This is a war that in all likely hood, can not be won. It would be stupid to think that all Muslims are like this but the fact is many are and this will never change. We have to be less tolerant and more tough with all these " special interest groups ", that are trying to change our traditions, beliefs and culture that we as Canadians hold dear. My father came to Canada in 1953 and my mother in 1957. They came here to a new country and embraced it. My parents were proud of being Canadian citizens and always flew the Canadian flag as my mom still does. My dad framed and hung on the wall, both my parents Canadian citizenship certificates and they are both still on the wall. My parents never forgot where they came from but they always appreciated what Canadian culture afforded them. Sadly i do not see much of that today. George.

Got a letter from my friend and MP this morning.

ImageProxy.mvc?bicild=&canary=z39JW%2fW%2fK28x0NQnfeQrXFAAcnaf3KdOwA58qBCCf38%3d0&url=http%3a%2f%2fih.constantcontact.com%2ffs107%2f1101584451509%2fimg%2f371.jpg

Dear Friends:

As you well know, Ottawa has been a victim of an act of terror - the second in Canada this past week. Just before 10AM on October 22nd, an assailant attacked and gunned down an unarmed soldier standing guard at our National War Memorial at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a reservist based in Hamilton with Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders was only 24 years old and leaves behind a young son.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

Unfortunately, Wednesday's act of barbarism did not stop there. The assailant made his way to the steps of Parliament Hill, before shooting his way through the front door of the Centre Block - the heart and soul of Canadian democracy. In the ensuing gun battle which took place in the Hall of Honour - the principal ceremonial space and a dividing line between the House of Commons and the Senate - a hero left his imprint in the history of our nation.

Canada's Sergeant-At-ArmsKevin Vickers and his colleagues, saved the lives of so many of us who were working in the building at that time. He did so by confronting and shooting the assilant mere meters from where my colleagues and I were holding our weekly Wednesday morning caucus meeting under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

For reference, the Hall of Honour is lined with two sets of doors which lead to two rooms. One of these was housing my colleagues and the other contained the Members of the Official Opposition.

After spending the better part of ten hours in lock-down in that room, I want to express my appreciation to Canada's men and women in uniform. It is with deep respect that I extend my gratitude to these brave men and women who serve our country - to the RCMP, the Ottawa Police, the Canadian Forces and the Parliamentary Security Services.

In the days and weeks to come more information will be made available regarding the motives and intent of this cowardly assault. Still, as has been the case with so many acts of terrorism, this tragedy has resulted in the exact opposite of what surely this individual intended. Indeed his senseless act has brought our nation closer together.

                                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"But let there be no misunderstanding, we will not be intimidated. In fact, this will lead us to strengthen our resolve and redouble our efforts and those of our national security agencies to take all necessary steps in order to identify and counter threats, and keep Canada safe here at home." Prime Minister Stephen Harper's address to Canada, October 23, 2014
                                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At this time of reflection, I would be remiss if I did not mention Monday's act of terror in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec during which two members of the Canadian Forces were targeted in a hit-and-run causing the death of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent

These two acts of terror, so brutal in form and in close proximity have truly changed the security landscape of our nation. As such, our Government will be taking appropriate action in the coming weeks to address these issues.

As we near Remembrance Day, let us mourn all those who have died at the hands of mindless fanaticism and give thanks to those, like Mr. Vickers, and all who put themselves in harms way in order to keep us safe day-in and day-out.

Kerry and I join all Canadians in praying for those touched by this week's attacks. May God bless them and may Gold bless Canada.

Lest we forget.

Sincerely,

In australia Our thoughts and prayers go out to Canada. I don't know what goes on in the head of these essentially young people to want to commit such acts. I dread the day this happens for the first time on Australian soil. I agree hawkeye5766. We may not be next door but i believe Canada has allies in Australia as well. I certainly hope the G20 goes off without problems in brisbane next month. our office is making plans in case of rioting!

My understanding was these guards are not armed to start with.They carry empty guns for show.
Sure hope this changes fast.And as far as Rosie O'Donnel goes,she needs a gun stuffed up her a...
and fired off.

I usually think that Rosie O'Donnel and most celebrities are idiots, but she makes a point in this case, although the timing may have been wrong. She was commenting on a Tweet...."active shooting in Canada, or as we call it in america, wednesday." .....Americans have a different mindset about guns than most Canadians have.....Would having a bunch of armed people around changed anything on Wednesday?...Doubt it...it happens every day in the USofA

Geez, in our civil society the Army is used for National Defense. Unless there is a war or war measures act these solider can not carry live ammunition, that's the role of the police. The sad irony is that perhaps there will have to be a Police presence at the War Memorial now guarding the guard of honour.
