A compression test would have pointed to that hole real quick.....

Like the other guys said......a decent 283 runner is not that hard to find.....

Or in Manitoba. When I was looking it took me 3 years of pretty steady searching in the classifieds and asking car guys.

I guess what I'm trying to say IS........there are ALOT of IDIOTS out there that will pull a decent 283 and nearly GIVE it away....to replace it with a larger displacement engine dressed up in chinese chrome and other junk ....loosing driveability....gas mileage....for a bit more power......that is rarely ever used or needed......

Well I found a decent clean 1969 327 that I purchased to drop in for now.  Ill be pulling the 283 and rebuilding it for the future.

How complete is it?

You may know but I thought I'd mention it, since it's a 69 it has the long water pump and different pulleys. You'll need to put the 283 front end stuff onto it to make it all work properly.

Well after much trial and tribulation I finally have a living breathing air aspirated 20 foot long 4000lb hunk of sexiness in my driveway.  It wasnt an easy haul though and I have definitely learned a ton.

The deal for the 327 replacement fell through but I ended up with a 62 283 fresh rebuild from Mallory Town and dropped it in a week ago and yesterday it ran for the first time!   I had purchased a 600 Holley that turned out to be too big so found a rebuilt Holley 390 and I am very pleased with it.  I watched the fuel consumption improve as well as no richness and better pickup.  I still have to figure out my kick down.  An interesting point, when I tuned the motor to 3 degrees from TDC it was very grumpy but turning the distributor by hand and fiddling with the alt a bit she now is running like a top.  Funny thing is the timing is definitely off the mark though.  Got my appraisal done and been driving it this week.

Im running Castrol 10/30 non synth for now and was told to change out after 500km.  Any input or comments is appreciated.

You've got that right! Good stuff.

Keep running non-synthetic oil after the break-in.

So you've got the '62 283 bolted up to your '64 aluminum Power Glide?

Yes, I have kept the # matching 283 for a rebuild and dropped this older fresh one in.  it was completely rebuilt with a very mild cam, I bought it off the builder he never put in a project.  Powerglide was original to the car.

Its going in for paint Monday.283.jpg

neighbour has a 327 300 hp all apart + a 66 Pontiac 283 that covered up outside!!! Think the 283 is likely seized by now has the P/G attached to it!!! Don't know what he's doing with them, but doesn't seem interested in getting them gone????

Yes have done the last few days.  Seems a little sluggish of the start but tons of pull on the highway at higher rpms.  I have a strange vibration that seems cyclical in the sense that its almost timed to every other second and when I look along the top of the bench seat it almost seems to "bounce" up and down with the vibration.  In speaking with my father he thinks this may be due to the fact i have 14's on the front and 15's on the back and they may be creating a harmonic disturbance.

Any thougths/
