Gauging interest, '57 Pontiac fresh air vent doors

Hello all, been a long while since I've been on here. Finally been back working on my '57 after a rather long hiatus. I've reached a point where I have the fresh air vent door out, and have the door itself disassembled. The sheetmetal pieces are rotting at the bottom, and I wonder if this is common. I have a pal in the industrial supply biz, and can have the metal pieces as well as the rubber seal cut. It's at this point where I'm looking for input. Since the set-up cost to cut 'em is going to be the major part of the cost, do I just have the 2 sets cut that I need to fix my car, Or should I have 4 or 5 cars worth built so I can help out others with a reproduction door assembly? This way, I could off-set the set up cost somewhat. Thoughts?

RE: Gauging interest, '57 Pontiac fresh air vent doors

I never knew a part like that went bad in any way, other than maybe a brittle seal. On my 57 Poncho, both vent assemblies were excellent, even the seals. I would say just do a set for your own car because i doubt there is going to be any demand but then again you never know. You might be swamped with orders for a set. Either way good luck with the venture. Cheers. George.

Thanks for the input guys. I think based on this, I'll just him to cut me the pieces I need, depending of course, on the cost. I may wind up just making 'em myself, we'll see. And yes Carl, I'll put some pics up soon. The ol' rig is making some progress again, I'm probably getting 15 odd hours in a week on it lately. Hopefully be making noise in a couple months.

Yes for sure keep us updated on your fine 57 ride. I can now remember a number of years ago when you were working on your 57. Of course i am partial, having one just like it. What motor is in it or was in it, if you have changed it. I sure hope it is 261 inline six. Continued good luck with your 57. Cheers. George.

It was originally a 261 car, but it was engine-less when we got it, and I had an un-assembled 383 cube small block without a car, so that's what's in it now. Thanks George.

Would they be comparable to any Chev/Buick/Olds doors? Just asking.

I have to do some more research, but I believe them to be the same as '55/56 Chevy. Seems the '57 Chevy fresh air inlets are completely different from '57 Canadian Pontiacs, Despite the "identical from the firewall back" information seen nearly everywhere. The things I've learned about these cars. I'll get a thread going here soon and share some of my various discoveries.

Did a little digging, they look the same as driver's side '55'56 Chev, but the Chevys use a smaller, square one on the passenger side, where as the Poncho's have the same on either side. I wonder if American Pontiacs are the same configuration.
