1956 the increase in living standards and the focus on education helped to fuel the increase in college education with 1 in 3 high school graduates now going off to college.
TV shows included "As The World Turns" and "The Price is Right".
Mothers could now buy disposable diapers and tefal non stick Frying Pans.
Elvis Presley appears on the Ed Sullivan show and enters the music charts for the first time, with "Heartbreak Hotel".
Actor Charles Laughton served as substitute host the night of Elvis' first appearance because Sullivan was recuperating from an auto accident. In kinescopes and video footage of that performance, Elvis can be seen in full figure, crooning 'Love Me Tender' and 'Don't Be Cruel', then later belting out 'Hound Dog' and 'Ready Teddy'.
Ed Sullivan, never a fan of controversy, had already refused an offer to hire Elvis for $5,000. The famously prickly host had been burned before by rock 'n' roll stars: He vowed to drum Bo Diddley out of television after his 1955 act on the show, when he sang his own hit 'Bo Diddley' instead of Sullivan's request, Tennessee Ernie Ford's 'Sixteen Tons'. But Elvis' ratings - his stint on the Allen show had trounced Sullivan - changed his mind. Even as he professed to the press that Elvis was 'not my cup of tea', Ed Sullivan had already begun negotiations with Elvis' agent, Colonel Tom Parker. His hesitation cost him heavily, however. He would end up agreeing to shell out $50,000 for three appearances, an unprecedented sum.
Elvis made his Sullivan debut on the show's season premiere, but on the big night neither Sullivan nor Elvis was in the New York studio. Elvis was in Hollywood, filming his first movie, and he sang from the CBS studio there. Sullivan was recovering from an August head-on car collision, and Charles Laughton, the star of Mutiny on the Bounty, filled in for the host, hailing his guest by saying, 'Away to Hollywood to meet Elvis Presley'.
Elvis, wearing a loud plaid jacket, greeted the audience from a set decorated with stylized guitar shapes. He announced that the show was 'probably the greatest honor I have ever had in my life', and then launched into 'Don't Be Cruel'. The camera stayed above his waist for now, sometimes closing in on his face, sometimes turning to show his backup singers, but something Elvis was doing out of lens range was causing unexplained screams from the audience. After the number was over, he acknowledged the vocal segment of the crowd, saying, 'Thank you, ladies'. To finish the first segment, he played the title song to his new movie, 'Love Me Tender', introducing it as 'completely different from anything we've ever done.' Nationwide, disk jockeys taped the performance and played the song, which had yet to be released, on their radio shows, increasing pre-release orders to almost a million and pushing forward the single's release date.

O mein pa pa by Eddie fisher. Well pa pa is what the grand kids call me. Do I feel old. Would that be number one in Canada or north america in general. Since I was born in England I will have to look for that some where.
1958, the recession year in North America. "It's only make believe" by Conway Twitty. I am ok with that tune because most tunes in 1958 were lame as well. Conway Twitty did this Elvis like tune before he went Country full blown. It is a tune with a lot of emotion in, i will take it. George.

"The pursuit of perfection is frustrating and a waste of time because nothing is ever perfect. The pursuit of excellence is commendable and worth while. Therefore strive for excellence, not perfection"

Stood Running Bear Young Indian brave On the other side of the river Stood his lovely Indian maid Little White Dove was her name Such a lovely sight to see But their tribes fought with each other So their love could never be
Running Bear loved Little White Dove With a love big as the sky Running Bear loved Little White Dove With a love that couldn't die
He couldn't swim the raging river 'Cause the river was too wide He couldn't reach the Little White Dove Waiting on the other side In the moonlight he could see her Throwing kisses 'cross the waves Her little heart was beating faster Waiting for her Indian brave
Running Bear loved Little White Dove With a love big as the sky Running Bear loved Little White Dove With a love that couldn't die
Running Bear dove in the water Little White Dove did the same And they swam out to each other Through the swirling stream they came As their hands touched and their lips met The raging river pulled them down Now they'll always be together In their happy hunting ground
Running Bear loved Little White Dove With a love big as the sky Running Bear loved Little White Dove With a love that couldn't die

Guys i don't know if this makes a difference to you but it does to me. Since most of us on here are canucks if you are interested in what song was number One in Canada the day you were born you probably should use the CHUM chart as it was complied by the toronto staion from about 1957 to about 1984 and it would reflect Canadian content which the american charts would not do.

Here is a link: I think.

Ken i agree with you but i do not see a way to access the charts to do this. As a kid i collected CHUM CHARTS from 1969 to 1973 and i kept them like new and mint. Then one day they all vanished, to this day i do not know who stole ALL my Chum Charts. I have a good friend who is 62 and he has his Chum Chart collection from 1964 to 1976. George.

I'm not sure they are still on line but they all were available freely on line a few years ago. I actually printed them all out from the beginning to the end and still have them. (not sure why) The online verision wouldn't have been as cool as the originals though so sorry you lost em. I'll have to see if I can find where they used to be posted and link it here.
There are some quite significant differences I think between American Charts and Canadian especially in the years when Cabndian Content was kindof new. Some differences were just becuause of different tastes too I think. For instance the Everly Brothers had a Number one in Canada with "Bowling Green" in 1967 when it didn't do anything in the states. Better taste in Canada in my opinion as it was an awesome catchy song.
This is the best Canadian chart link I can find at the moment:

You keep me Hangin' on by the Supremes. I want to be born when Rodger was. and I'm only 25,378,183 minutes old but still feel like I'm 16,000,000 minutes.
