Transgo 400-1&2 shift kit installation in my 1968 parisienne.

I have installed the Transgo 400-1&2 kit in my 68 Parisienne. Their website has a handy video, but dont rely on it. The instructions included override the video instructions. The video includes steps not to be done! I made a mistake and removed the 2-3 solenoid, and I had to wait for replacement parts before I could finish the job. The video is located at http://transgo.com/400_1&2Video.html

TG1.jpg

Inside the box. There are not that many parts, and some are only used if the tranny is out of the car.

TG2.jpg

Remove the pan bolts allowing the fluid to drain from the pan. Loosen them so you can try to catch the fluid from one area of the pan. Then remove the filter.

TG3.jpg

Remove the wire that goes from the detent solenoid to the connector.

TG5.jpg

Remove the 7 bolts with a ½ socket from the valve body, then the bolt with the detent spring and roller. Remove 2 of the remaining bolts towards the front of the car with a 7/16 socket, Loosen the last bolt and let the fluid drain for a minute or two. Support the valve body and remove the last bolt. While supporting the valve body with your hand, pry the two tubes down with a screwdriver. Once the valve body is removed, place in pan.

TG4.jpg

Using a pan bolt, put it in finger tight as shown

TG6.jpg

Now remove the detent solenoid and place solenoid and bolts in the pan.

TG38.jpg

Support the plate with your hand and remove the pan bolt. Lower carefully so not to drop any of the check balls. The instruction show where they go, but it isnt a bad idea to note the locations of the check balls.

TG8.jpg

Pull down on the pin to remove the intermediate servo parts and put them in the pan.

TG9.jpg

Now the video says to remove the low reverse servo cover gasket and servo assembly. I dont see any reason to do this other than to drain some more of the old fluid because you dont change anything here, and it isnt in the way to do anything. If I was to do it again, I would leave it in place.

TG10.jpg

TG12.jpg

Now take your parts to the bench and clean them.

TG14.jpg

TG15.jpg

2-3 Accumulator upgrade. DO NOT do this as I did. You WILL be sorry. These instructions are not in the included instructions, but are on the video.

Shift command feature. Read the included instructions and decide if you want to do this. If not, skip these two steps and continue. I elected to do this upgrade.

Remove this pin, only if you are performing the shift command feature upgrade.

TG16.jpg

TG20.jpg

Remove the 1-2 shift valve and aluminum sleeve from bore as shown in picture. Clean the valve body bore and all parts removed. The kit comes with two replacement valves, use the one that is the same size as the existing one and replace it. Reassemble and insert the pin.

TG21.jpg

Insert the cup plug into the sole and tap with a small hammer.

TG23.jpg

Read over the 1-2 shift firmness page and decide which is best for you.

Remove the roll pin and adjust accordingly. Transgo suggests leaving as is and changing after if necessary. I decided to go one stop up from where I was in firmness. I had no springs, so I installed one spring only, one step firmer than no springs.

Remove the roll pin and valve. This is where you would add, change or remove springs.

Reassemble.

TG24.jpg

TG25.jpg

Now it is time to drill the holes in the separator plate based on the range you have selected. Refer to the enclosed instructions. Dont forget to chamfer the drilled holes and clean the separator plate thoroughly.

TG26.jpg

Find the gasket labeled VB and lay it on the valve body.

TG27.jpg

Lay the separator plate on the gasket and valve body. Align them up with one of the valve body mounting bolts.

TG28.jpg

Thoroughly lubricate the separator plate with transmission fluid

TG29.jpg

Lay the gasket labeled C on top of the separator plate, and again align with the valve body mounting bolts.

TG30.jpg

TG31.jpg

With Vaseline, place the check balls on the separator plate as described in the instructions.

TG32.jpg

If there was a screen in the holes for the governor tubes, clean it and reinsert. Then install the governor tubes into the valve body.

TG33.jpg

Make sure the manual valve is in place as shown.

TG34.jpg

If you removed the low/reverse servo, reinstall it at this time. Make sure you lube all sealing rings. The kit didnt include any replacement parts, so I dont see a need to have removed this in the first place, even though I did.

TG10.jpg

Lube the intermediate servo assembly, and reinstall. You will need a pick or small screwdriver to compress the ring to slide it in.

TG35.jpg

Install the separator place, being careful not to lose any of the check balls. Use two of the valve body bolts to align, and use a pan bolt to hold in place. Just like when the separator plate was removed.

TG36.jpg

Install the solenoid and connect the wire to the connector.

TG38.jpg

Remove the valve body bolts and the pan bolt from the separator plate. Position the valve body being careful to align the governor tubes. Install the 7 bolts with a ½ socket, the 3 smaller bolts with the 7/16 socket and the bolt with the detent spring and roller.

TG39.jpg

Install the pan with the new gasket provided in the kit.

TG40.jpg

Fill with fluid and test run. I can't do a test run until spring comes...

it feels great! Very assertive firm shift, but not too firm. Feels just right.

If you've got mechanical skills, you can do this. Not difficult at all.

The shifts are firmer, makes the car feel stronger. It will now downshift at any speed, so you have to be careful not to do that at too high of a speed. I can now chirp the tires at full throttle shifting from 1st to 2nd, could not do that before.
